North-South Foundation promotes student excellence in academics

North South is a non-profit organization that coordinates practice-sessions and contests in multiple subjects for students in grades 1-12, and also helps raise money for underprivileged students in India.

“Students' persistent practice pays off. For example, the vast majority the winners of the Scripps spelling bee last year were NorthSouth participants,” says Sanjeev Trika, the Portland chapter-director. “Competitions inspire kids to work harder, and they have fun while learning a lot,” he says.

NorthSouth offers a series of practice sessions and helps students participate in academic competitions. Many of the practice sessions are free, the contests are nominally priced, and their registration fee may be tax-deductible (depends on your situation). Money raised through the registrations and donations is sent to support education in India.

Locally, the program is run by 20+ dedicated volunteers. The program is seeking to broaden outreach and increase communication and cooperation among all students and families.

The regional contests will be held in April at PCC’s Willow Creek campus. Practice sessions for the contest are underway. Practice sessions are led by advanced high school students and generally take place on Saturdays. Top students from the regional contests are invited to participate in national contests, which will be held in University of Washington this year.

Trika is an Engineering Manager at Intel, which encourages employees to give back to their community through volunteering their time. In addition, Intel and other employers may also match donations to cover NSF fees.
