Cider Festival returns October 19

The Second Annual Cedar Mill Cider Festival will bring old-time family fun back to the grounds of the John Quincy Adams Young House on Sunday, October 19, from 1-4 pm. Local Boy Scouts will run two cider mills producing fresh cider from apples donated by Bales Thriftway. Presented by Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) the event will include a display about the house and grounds and THPRD’s plans for it. Donations to help with the cost of renovations are welcome, but there’s no charge for the event.

Ida ViperPopular local band Ida Viper will provide the tunes. Drawing on the roots of American music from bluegrass and swing to jazz tunes from the 20’s and 30’s, the group includes Mark Petteys (5-string banjo and guitar), Brian Oberlin (mandolin) and Russ Baker (standup bass). Get a taste of their music at idaviper.com.

Our own local award-winning barbecue team, Burnt Ends, will be serving up hot Pulled Pork or Beef Brisket sandwiches, chips and slaw for $6. They will also serve $3 hot dogs for kids. Cedar Mill’s Leedy Grange will offer apple crisp and ice cream for dessert, and the cider to wash down all these goodies is free. There will be plenty of picnic tables under the spreading chestnut tree behind the house.

The grounds are wheelchair accessible, although the area is not paved and can be rough in spots. Free parking for the event is available in the east end of the Cedar Mill Bible Church lot on Cornell.

Kids activities will be provided by THPRD’s RecMobile. Several local organizations will have information booths and activities, including CPO1, the Cedar Mill Business Association and the Cedar Mill Bible Church.

State health regulations restrict cider consumption to onsite only, but last year it was all slurped up by the end of the event anyway!

Thanks to event sponsors Polygon Homes, Bales Thriftway, and the Cedar Mill Bible Church. The JQA Young House is located at the corner of Cornell Road and 119th. For more information call THPRD at 503-629-6355.
