Visit with Santa!Sat., Dec. 9, 2-4 pm, Second Edition, 12505 Northwest Cornell Road. Free. Bring your children and grandchildren to Second Edition for a visit with Santa. Children will get a chance to sit on Santa’s lap and receive a small gift, while supplies last. Bring a camera if you like to capture the moment. Second Edition is a quality resale shop benefiting the Cedar Mill Library.
Holiday Dance to Support Homeless YouthSat., Dec. 9, 7-10 pm, Leedy Grange Hall, 835 NW Saltzman Dance to swing, ballroom and Latin music while making the holidays a little brighter for homeless youth in Washington County. Leedy Grange is holding a Holiday Formal Dance to collect donations for HomePlate Youth Services supporting homeless students in the Beaverton School District. HomePlate Youth Services is headquartered in Beaverton, but has drop-in locations for youth in several locations throughout Washington County. HomePlate offers hot meals, showers, clothing and a safe place to go. HomePlate values hospitality, open communication, respect and compassion for youth struggling to better themselves and their situations. “I was honestly surprised when I heard of the number of homeless youth in Washington County,” explained Dean Moberg, Executive Committee member of Leedy Grange. “Last year, Leedy raised $600 in gift card donations plus four barrels of clothes and other items at the dance. We’d like to do even better this year.” Please bring donations as your ticket to the dance. Gift cards of $5 or $10 (or more) from Fred Meyer, Target, Subway, coffee shops and movie theatres are much appreciated! HomePlate distributes the gift cards to needy youth both as a way for them to buy some small item for themselves and also so they can buy a gift for a loved one. In addition to gift cards, Leedy will accept new or gently used sleeping bags, men’s pants, new wool socks or water proof winter gloves and then make sure these donations get to HomePlate for distribution to needy youth. It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without the Northwest’s premier brass ensemble. This snappy and sassy holiday show has been entertaining audiences for decades. This will be the 27th annual concert at St. Matthew. The concert features 15 shining pieces of brass and percussion playing holiday favorites, and crowd-pleasing surprises that will thrill your whole family, including music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and a special reading of “The Night Before Christmas”! In addition, we are delighted to include talented LaRhonda Steele as our featured vocalist. LaRhonda was the 2016 Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award for Best Female Vocalist! Please arrive early for both parking and seating. The Erik Weswig Memorial Fund, the St. Matthew Lutheran Church Foundation, St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the Beaverton Arts Commission sponsor this year’s concert. Donations are accepted. A year of Cedar Mill history!The Cedar Mill Historical Society is releasing the 2018 Cedar Mill History Calendar, just in time for holiday giving, and for sharing your love of our community with visitors to your home or business!
The calendars are only $10 each, and are available to purchase online at the Cedar Mill History website, or at the new office of the Cedar Mill News at the northwest corner of the Milltowner Shopping Center, 12050 NW Cornell (two doors north of the laundromat). The News office is usually open from 11-5 weekdays. Images are from Nancy Olson’s collection of history photos that were initially collected for the Cedar Mill History book. She had copies mounted on cardboard, so she could visit area elementary schools to share our history with school children. Her son Nick kindly scanned them all so we could have digital copies. Images from the collection are part of the Cedar Mill History Museum display, that will be open again December 16-17, with traditional holiday decorations, historical artifacts and models. Wishes and Gifts at Sunshine PantrySat., Dec. 24, 10895 SW 5th Street, Beaverton Oregon 97008 Sunshine Pantry has been helping families in need for 36 years. Our “Wishes and Gifts” event lets parents choose toys, new clothing, and food for their families for the holidays on the Saturday before Christmas Day. We need donations to make this happen, and we need volunteers to help before and during the event. To volunteer and help, call 971-506-7827. Cash donations are always welcome to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, turkey and hams for our food bank. Some Ways to Give (and Get) Joy this Holiday SeasonYour mom always told you that it’s better to give than to get, but this holiday season, Sunset Credit Union would like to share a few ways you can both give and get joy. Participate in the Salvation Army’s “Angel Tree.” Stop by Sunset Credit Union (located at 1100 NW Murray Blvd) and pick up one of the “Angel Tree” tags and purchase a gift for a child. Then simply return the unwrapped gift to the credit union and they’ll collect them for the Salvation Army, which will be picking up all the gifts on December 18th. Visit www.sspfcu.com or stop by their office at 1100 NW Murray Blvd. THPRD Renews Holiday Giving Drive For Those In NeedTualatin Hills Park & Recreation District employees will once again work with the Beaverton School District and other community partners to create a brighter holiday season for those in need in the Beaverton area. THPRD will collect toys, clothing and other items for selected families and homeless children within its boundaries. The park district will also collect personal hygiene products and new or slightly used linens for the Union Gospel Mission LifeChange Center for Women & Children in Beaverton. The public is invited to join employees and support both efforts at THPRD facilities throughout the Beaverton area. Donations of personal hygiene products will be accepted from Nov. 28 to Dec. 23. During open hours Nov. 24 through Dec. 14, each THPRD center and administrative facility will have a giving tree, wreath or garland with “snowflakes” that specify a variety of wish list items. Donors will be able to take a snowflake and return with a new, unwrapped gift. All gifts are to be distributed to families that have been identified by the Beaverton School District. One notable change: The annual holiday giving drive will no longer officially include food donations. Park district officials have decided to shift their food drive to next summer. “What we are hearing from the community is that donations peak during the holiday season but they begin dipping in spring, and the greatest need is in the summer. Our peak community engagement takes place during our summer events. This creates an opportunity to make a bigger impact in how we help households within our district facing food insecurity,” said Doug Menke, THPRD general manager. Spread Holiday Cheer for Children in NeedTualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters are dedicated to responding to the fire and emergency medical needs of the community at a moment’s notice. This holiday season, firefighters are asking community members to help them come through for less-fortunate children as well. For more than three decades, the KGW Great Toy Drive has provided hundreds of thousands of toys to our community’s less-fortunate families in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The toys collected during the toy drive are distributed to needy kids in our area with the help of more than 130 local organizations and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue has been a longtime partner in supporting KGW’s Great Toy Drive. TVF&R fire stations are once again accepting new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages beginning November 14 and continuing through December 15. With the help of our generous community members, TVF&R firefighters were able to fill a fire engine and box truck full of toys to deliver to the KGW studios last December. This year, the need continues to be great, and firefighters hope to exceed last year’s collection effort. Cedar Mill-area residents and businesses can drop off any new, unwrapped toys at the following local stations: Bethany Station 68, 13545 NW Evergreen St. Cornell Road Station 60, 8585 NW Johnson St. North Beaverton Station 61, 13730 SW Butner Road. All toys donated by December 15 will be donated to the KGW Great Toy Drive. TVF&R knows that we serve a generous, compassionate community. With temperatures dropping, there is an increased need for items for the many men, women, and children living on the streets of Portland, and it is our honor to answer the call with collection bins located at our Barnes Road office. We welcome you to bring new or gently used blankets and coats anytime during business hours, or connect with your ELEETE broker or staff member to coordinate a pick up. While the core of our business is assisting those in their home search or sale, we are keenly aware of the plight facing those with no roof over their heads and humbly thank you, our community, for joining with us in this effort to provide items for warmth. Tree recyclingSeveral scout troops and other groups hold recycling fundraisers for your trees and holiday greenery. You may have gotten an envelope on your doorknob if you live in one of their target neighborhoods. Here’s the information we have. We have also heard that Troops 728, 207, and 618 are participating, but we didn’t get their information in time to print. We’ll update the web version of this article if we get more details. Sunset Racquetball Pickup: By appointment from December 26, 2017 to January 31, 2018. Funds raised help to purchase equipment for the Sunset Racquetball Club. $12 for green trees, $15 for flocked trees. $3 for wreaths, swags and garlands. Curbside recycling In addition, you can cut up and recycle your tree, cleaned of all tinsel and other non-plant material, in or next to your yard-recycling bin. Here’s the information from Walker Garbage: All trees will be picked up as yard debris during yard debris weeks. Trees need to be placed next to your containers, out at the curb (or wherever they are normally placed for pick up). Artificial/flocked trees will be picked up as garbage and will be charged as an extra unit of garbage at: $6.25 in Washington County, $5 in Portland and $4.85 in Beaverton. All trees need to be 6 ft. and under. If your tree is over 6 ft., it must be cut down into smaller sections. Trees (6 ft. and under) set out without a yard debris cart will be picked up at no charge. Additional sections will be charged as an extra unit of yard debris at: $3 in Washington County, $3.75 in Portland and $3.45 in Beaverton. Trees (6 ft. and under) set out in addition to a full yard debris cart will be charged at: $4.50 each in Washington County and Portland and $3 each in Beaverton. Please cut up your tree so it all fits inside your yard debris cart with the top closed. Any tree parts left beside the bin will be charged as extra material.
