Culinary Passport: Peru

The dense Peruvian jungles, Amazon rainforest and delicious food and beverages attract visitors from around the world who are awed by the colors, sights, and sounds. Come learn about this extraordinary country and sample some of its superb cuisine.

Lunch and Learn: Hearing for the Holidays Presentation

The holidays are fast approaching! As family and friends gather for this joyous season, hearing loss and increased noise levels at family events can create challenges. If you or someone you know is struggling to understand clearly, this would be good time to learn more. Join us in the Patton Room of the Clubhouse Lodge for this interactive workshop and learn strategies for improving your communication ability and staying connected. In this workshop, we will review anatomy, common causes of hearing loss, impacts of hearing loss, prevalence of hearing loss in our society, and treatment options, including assistive listening devices and hearing aids. Bring your questions and curiosity for this fun and informative one-hour class with Darin Scheurer from Smart Step Hearing. To ensure there is enough food, RSVPs are especially helpful for this event.

Parkinson’s Support Group

Youth Classes
Children's Shodo Classes—Ages 6-14 years old

3-week course, Mondays: December 2, 9, 16, 4:30-6 pm; OR 6:30-8pm

Express kids' creativity and build concentration by writing and drawing using Japanese Calligraphy techniques. Children will learn the basics of how to write Japanese characters or English characters with the Calligraphy brush in their own style. Kids will be taught the fundamentals of the ancient Zen art of Shodo; which is not just the way of calligraphy, but also teaches concentration, meditative calm and attention, and expression of oneself through the brush. Debbie Teeter—Children's Art Classes, Ages 7-11 years old

3-week course, Thursdays: December 5, 12, 19 ; 3:45-4:45pm

Come join an exciting class learning a variety of art forms. Debbie will be developing each child’s art ability and providing them an opportunity to build their skills and explore different media and approaches, so they can find out what they will enjoy. Each lesson will explore both art concepts and techniques. Activities may include drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media. Subject matter will include people, faces, landscapes, plants and animals, and exploring subject matter in imaginative ways. Debbie Teeter—Intro to Watercolor

4-week course, Tuesdays, November 5, 12, 19, 26; 2-5 pm

Have you always wanted to try watercolor? Or have you tried watercolor but found it somewhat daunting? Whether you have painted before or not, this class will guide you through the basics of working with watercolor and also give you some options for creative approaches with it. Lessons will cover the unique properties of this medium, composition, color, and “bells and whistles.” We will explore varied subject matter, and also how other artists have explored this medium. Mary Lehner—Seasonal Imagery: Painting for the Holidays

5-week course, Mondays: November 11, 18, 25, December 2, 9; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

Intermediate to Advanced Watercolor: Are you ready to take your painting skills to the next level and bring passion to your watercolors? Join Mary Lehner to explore fresh ways to invigorate your style. We will be painting from Fall and Winter imagery in this 5-week session. Mary will demonstrate and discuss the journey from static to lively interpretations in watercolor. This class is not so much about technique as it is about letting the watercolor medium work to your advantage by slowly learning to "go with the flow." Using landscape and seascape photo research supplied by the the teacher, students will learn to "see" the subject matter in a new light, use looseness and color contrast to enhance dimensionality, and use light, shadow, color reflections and composition to learn to paint in a visually expressive and interpretive style. Brooke Walker-Knoblich—Painting with Brooke

2-week course, Tuesdays, December 3 & 10; 10 am-1pm

Students of all skill levels welcome. Appropriate for any medium.

This class will be a general themed painting class, so students can bring in any subject matter they choose. Please bring all your painting supplies and a table easel. Brooke will demonstrate in the first hour, leaving time for students to integrate techniques into their own work. Each class also includes a small group critique at the end. Painters of all skill levels are welcome.

Virginia Sumner—Fun With Acrylics Workshop

Saturday: November 23; 9 am-1 pm

Explore acrylics with childlike abandon in this workshop. We will loosen up our painting style and sample mono printing, glazing, resist, texture pastes and mark making, building layers on pieces we create and adding visual interest and depth as the afternoon progresses. Join the fun, try something new, make friends, come play with acrylics!

Gretha Lindwood—Beyond Basics: Further Exploration of Soft Pastels Workshop

Saturday & Sunday, December 7 & 8; 9 am-1 pm

For Strong Beginner and Intermediate Pastellists—Soft pastels only, not oil pastels. Weekend Workshop, Ages: 18 +

Express your impressions of the natural world using soft pastels. You will apply the principals of color, value and design in this fun, informative class as you continue to develop your personal style and gain a deeper understanding of the medium. You will work from your own photos while interpreting with your own “artistic voice.” Demonstrations and individual instruction will be given as Gretha shares tips, techniques and ideas.

Emily Stevens—Painting on Fabric

Saturday, December 14, 10 am to 2 pm

Workshop—Come play with us. Explore painting on fabric. All paints and brushes will be supplied by the instructor. You will experience painting with fabric paints made especially for fabric. Techniques will be taught. The inspiration for my work comes from people, travel, photos, imagination and doodling. I usually start with an original painting that I have either painted or printed on fabric. I use the sewing machine needle as my paintbrush and pencil as my design emerges on fabric. Mary Burgess – Paint Birds in Watercolor

6-week course: Wednesdays, January 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 1 9-9:30 am-12:30 pm, OR 6 -9 pm

All Levels Welcome. Learn to paint birds in watercolor using traditional techniques with Mary Burgess. Classes will focus on bird features including faces, feet, feathers and interesting backgrounds. Classes are built around specific exercises and handouts are included to support the concepts taught during each session. Each student receives individual guidance and attention. Mary Lehner—Freshen Up and Improve Still Life Techniques

5-week course: Mondays: January 6, 13, 20, 27, February 3; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

Rebecca Benoit—Cell Phonography & Snapseed: Snap, Edit, Share Phonemera Magic!

1-day Workshop: Saturday, Jan 11, 2020, 9:30 am-2:30 pm

Beginner level. Bring fully charged cell phone and/or iPad or Tablet with Snapseed app installed.

Truly phonography has become an art form of its own! Professional photography trainer Rebecca Benoit will help us explore tools in our phone cameras that you probably didn't even know it had! Learn to adjust focus and exposure, use burst mode, understand HDR and more. We will also cover fundamentals necessary to create juicy photos such as composition, exposure, focus and lighting and how to use the tools in your phone to make the most of these variables. We'll also play with some fun accessories such as wide angle, macro and telephoto lenses. After a lunch break, we'll explore Snapseed, a terrific, free, easy-to-use image editing/sharing app. By the end of this workshop, you will understand fundamentals of getting great photos, the capabilities of your phone or tablet camera, the use of an image editor and how to tie them all together to create and share compelling images.
