According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 45% of Americans who are 85 and older suffer from Alzheimer’s. Leisure Care communities take a whole person approach to memory care- taking the unique physical, social, and emotional needs of every individual suffering the disease into account.

“Care of residents is Ackerly’s top priority, and we ensure they’re having fun and getting involved in the community,” emphasizes Guest Services Manager Pauline Pierce. Giving back is a large part of the culture at the Ackerly, and with this Luau, attendees can experience a fun way to show support to the Alzheimer’s community. The Ackerly will be taking donations throughout the month of June for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and is participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Pickleball players to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease on The Longest Day

Touchmark Pickleball
The PickleBall court at Touchmark

Want to join the fight against Alzheimer's disease and have fun playing one of the fastest-growing sports around? People of all ages are invited to play pickleball to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

All ages and skill levels are welcome. Entrance is a $5 donation, which includes a T-shirt. Open play is 10 am-2:30 pm, and will help with bracketing those who want to play against others in the afternoon. For those choosing to compete, playoffs will be 2:30-5 pm and include double elimination and mixed doubles, both of which will include all levels.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, so bring the kiddos, your mom, dad, grandparents or friends!

“If people haven’t tried it, they should get out and try it. They’ll like it!” said John Eichorn, an 84-year old resident of Touchmark and 10-year pickleball player. “You don’t have to be particularly athletic to enjoy this sport. It’s really a sport for all ages; you can play at almost any age.”

Touchmark’s Longest Day pickleball play comes on the heels of the World Health Organization’s newly published study. It found physical activity, along with other healthy lifestyle choices, to be closely linked to reducing the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Pickleball is one of many great ways to exercise and improve physical and mental health,” says Sam Holzman, Touchmark Health & Fitness Director. “ It can be played regardless of age or skill level, and for older adults it can improve reflexes, muscle strength and range of motion.”

Pickleball Fast Facts:

  • Created in 1965 by Washington state Congressman Joel Pritchard and two friends
  • Named after Congressman Pritchard’s dog ‘Pickles’
  • Compared to tennis, table tennis, badminton and whiffle ball
  • Played by 2.8 million across the U.S., mostly on the West Coast, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association

Today, over 35 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer's, including more than five million Americans. In the U.S. alone, more than 15 million caregivers selflessly dedicate themselves to supporting those with Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases.

"Touchmark in the West Hills has two pickleball courts open to the public,” says Holzman. “We can’t wait to fill those courts in the fight against Alzheimer's on The Longest Day. Play is open to everyone.”
