Rock the Grange
Saturday, August 16, 7:30-10 pm, Leedy Grange Hall, 835 NW Saltzman
Come on down to the Grange Hall, bring the kids, and enjoy an evening of live rock and roll in our air-conditioned hall. Cheap date night in the neighborhood, or come alone and dust off your dancing shoes! Our house band 1Wire performs 60s-70s favorites; Inevitable Boogie will open with tunes to get you dancing.
Kids activities, board games, and light refreshments in the dining area.
$5 suggested donation—all proceeds from this month’s event go to the Sunshine Pantry. Donations of school supplies, household paper goods, and food are also welcome.
Second Edition News
Second Edition’s Back to School event starts at noon on Monday, August 11th. You’ll find everything you need from clothes and shoes to brand new supplies. All sales support the Cedar Mill Library.
August 17th is National Thrift Shop Day. Celebrate at Second Edition noon-4:30. Pick up a coupon in the library for 50% off any one item in the shop!

1917 Hupmobile Model N

Presenter Chris Becker grew up around old car hobbyists. His parents and grandparents have been collecting cars since the 1960s. As a child, Chris worked at Becker’s Model T & A Parts with his Dad. His Dad’s buddies would restore cars in their shop. Later the family started Becker’s Auto Restoration, a Do-It-Yourself auto restoration shop. They provide space and equipment to restore your vintage, antique, classic, rods of all kinds, and custom automobiles in the Portland Metro area. Sheriff’s Citizen Academy
September 2 through November 4, every Tuesday from 6-9:30 pm, with three weekend classes
Have you ever wanted to learn a bit more about law enforcement? The Washington County Sheriff's Office's Citizen Academy is getting underway and looking for volunteers. The Citizen Academy is part of the Sheriff's Office effort to promote and preserve a safe community for all citizens. The 55-hour training program combines classroom and hands-on instruction to members of the community. It also gives community members an opportunity to observe the inner workings of the Sheriff's Office.
Participants will learn about a variety of activities deputies are engaged in, from learning about police equipment, participating in jail activities, touring criminal justice facilities and participating in role-playing scenarios. Topics include crime scene investigations, patrol, the county jail, K-9 teams, tactical operations, and use of firearms, narcotics enforcement and more.
Each academy is limited to 40 students, and is free of charge. Classes are typically held in the training rooms at the Sheriff's Office at 215 S.W. Adams Avenue in Hillsboro. Free Family Caregiver Training Series
Tuesdays, September 2-30, from 1-4 pm at the Nimbus Conference Center
Registration is underway for a five-week family caregiver training sponsored by Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services’ Family Caregiver Support Program and No Worries Comprehensive In-Home Care. Topics include self-care, basic personal care techniques, assistive equipment, providing care to the cognitively impaired person, elder law considerations, end-of-life planning and community resources The training is designed for family members and other unpaid caregivers who provide care in the home. The Cedar Mill Garden Club announces its new officers: President Garnet Ascher, Vice President/ Program Chair Summer Browner, Co-Secretaries Susan Lane and Maeve McBrinn, and Treasurer Alice Schlosser.
The Cedar Mill Garden Club has been providing information and support to gardeners in the area since 1946, and continues to offer educational programming for the community. Join us to share gardening and landscaping topics, hear top-notch presenters on gardening and conservation, take field trips and share in the fellowship of like-minded men and women. The Cedar Mill Garden Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 9:30 am. Enrollment Open for Master Recycling Class
Every Wednesday from September 10 to October 29, 6:30-9 pm, Washington Street Conference Center, 225 S. First Avenue in downtown Hillsboro
The Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling Program and the City of Portland Master Recycler Program are offering an eight-week Master Recycling course. There are also two half-day Saturday field trips on September 20 and October 18, from 8 am-2 pm.
To become a Master Recycler, participants must attend all sessions and then volunteer at least 30 hours, sharing what they learned with neighbors, coworkers and the community. Instruction topics include thoughtful consumption, recycling markets and processes, hazardous household products, composting, green building and deconstruction. The course is a blend of professional presentations, peer group discussion and project development. Tuition is $50. Scholarships are available. Apply now through August 14 at MasterRecycler.org. Volunteer to help seniors

Washington County Disability, Aging & Veteran Services (DAVS) is recruiting volunteers for a variety of programs to support older adults in Washington and Columbia counties. A volunteer information and orientation session will cover the following volunteer opportunities:
Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA): Provide one-on-one confidential and objective health insurance information and assistance to people with Medicare.
Benefits Enrollment Center (BEC): Assist low-income clients with identifying and applying for possible benefits.
Project REACH (Ready to Extend a Caring Hand): Assist isolated and vulnerable seniors in accessing and navigating resources to remain independent.
Money Management: Help low-income clients with basic household financial tasks and/or manage their funds with client input.
Gatekeeper: Provide training to community members to identify vulnerable seniors or people with disabilities to connect them to services and programs.

Station 68 Update
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue's contractor is currently working on punch list items for the interior and exterior of the new fire station. Additionally, an emergency signal will be installed on NW Thompson to warn motorists that emergency vehicles may be exiting the station ahead.
Based on the amount of work left to be completed, TVF&R is anticipating a September move for the crews and a community open house in November.
