Virtue of the Month: Grace

grace

“Grace is our connection to the Divine, a sense that we are loved and provided for in all circumstances. It is opening ourselves to bounty. Grace inspires us to give unconditional love to others. When we are gracious and elegant, others are drawn to our company. With grace, we can turn every communication and relationship into a thing of beauty. We grow in grace when we treat each other with dignity, kindness, exquisite courtesy and whenever we forgive. As we connect deeply with grace, we become the presence of grace to others.”

“The will of God will never take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us.” Peter Feddema

Affirmation: I am thankful for the gift of Grace. It sustains my life.

Kitchen design - three upcoming trends

European-style cabinets (also known as frameless cabinets) are quickly gaining popularity here in the Northwest. By far the most popular kitchen cabinets in the world, they are the dominant cabinet style in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada. European style cabinets are built with thicker, stronger case parts and no face frame, giving a cleaner, more contemporary look and greater access to the contents inside.

Quartz countertops, made with “pieces” of granite and other composite materials, are now becoming the countertops of choice, with granite, natural stone and concrete on the wane. Preferred backsplash materials are tile, including mosaic, subway and glass. The current trend is to take the backsplash “full height” to bottom of cabinets.

Paint Color:  “less is more” with paint choices ranging in the Grays and Off whites. Dramatic accents including Graphite Gray, Pumpkin Orange and Cobalt Blue, can be used on an accent wall, or in an adjoining room for a sophisticated polish. For ceilings, trim and baseboards soft whites are best.

Kitchen Design 101: Thursday, September 18, 5:30-7:30 pm at Sherwin Williams in Cedar Mill 13555 NW Cornell. Workshops are free and space is limited to 10 per class, so please RSVP in advance to: Caryl K. Hoffman, CK Hoffman Design carylkhoff@gmail.com or call at 503-807-1348.

Is Your Student Organized?

Friday October 3, 6:45 pm at the Cedar Mill Library

Disorganization in your student's bedroom can create a mess that's a nuisance, but disorganization in their studies can affect grades, future work habits and success. There is no "right way" to get organized.

Come learn about your student's organizing style and hear how to set up a process that works for them and that will give them organizing skills to use not only in their studies but in many other areas of their lives. Unfortunately, we can't promise they'll use them to create a tidy bedroom!

Beth Giles, a Professional Organizer with NW Organizing Solutions, will be presenting the free workshop “The Organized Student” at the library. Please RSVP to beth@NWOrganizingSolutions.com or for more information call 503-709-0791.

Dinihanians Harvest Share and Fundraiser

This year we are again offering our fall Harvest Share for purchase. This end-of-the-season share is available to everyone. There is NO membership in the CSA required for purchasing a Harvest Share.  The idea is that this bountiful assortment of produce would be the basis for the Thanksgiving holiday meal, created from locally grown fall crops.

Many people don’t realize that there is a bountiful array of produce available from local farms, well into October and November.  Examples of  the items the share might contain* will be items like Cole Crops (Kale, Cabbage, Broccoli, Kohlrabi, etc.), Delicata and/or Butternut  Squash, Sweet Onions, Sweet Potatoes, Golden Beets, Pie Pumpkin, Yukon Gold Potatoes, Carrots, Eggs, Apples and/or Pears. *Because this is based on seasonality, we can’t say exactly what the share will contain but it will be very close to the listing above.

We will be offering our Harvest Share in two sizes, one appropriate for a two-person household and one for a family of four.  There is no limit to the number of shares one could purchase and they would make a great holiday gift for other family members or friends.

Another suggestion would be to purchase these shares as a donation to a needy family, who might not otherwise have access to these items during the holidays.  There are a number of ways donations can be made, either individually or as a group.

Reservations for shares began on September 1.  Visit our website yourcsa.com to reserve your share online, or come by the farm any day, 10 am until 6 pm, through the end of October.

We also sell these shares at a quantity discount for any local community group (schools, churches, Rotary Club, etc.) so that they may be sold as a fundraiser for that group.  As a fundraiser, it is a great opportunity to support local farmers and the local economy while supplying participants with an excellent product.  Everybody has to eat (Thanksgiving dinner) so why not make it fresh, local and delicious, while earning $$$ for your project!   For details about sign-up dates, price, delivery, etc. for fundraisers, please contact Suzanne at Dinihanian Farm. Email suzanne.ballard@dinihanian.com or phone 503-432-6235 and leave a voice mail so someone can call back.
