“Art Hour” at Skyline Memorial Gardens

Fridays, September 9, October 14, November 11, December 9, 6-8 pm, Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd, free

In the spirit of the celebration of every life, members of the community are invited to Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home to help set the stage for incorporating art within the retreat-like setting of Skyline Memorial. We want to inspire the community to discuss how Skyline Memorial can be used as a gallery, a studio, and a place for learning.

“We believe in inviting the community to enjoy Skyline Memorial’s inspirational vistas and statuary,” says Rachel Fox, manager of Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, a member of the Dignity Memorial® network. “The staff at Skyline Memorial Gardens feel as though the tranquility of the location and its expansive vistas to the coast range mountains are works of art in itself, we often see people playing musical instruments, sketching and photographing the views. This got us thinking, ‘why not invite the public in and ask them how Skyline Memorial can be an avenue for others to create art, enjoy art, and meet artists?”

Selected works by local artist Veronica Lake will be exhibited. Lake, who resides in the area, specializes in watercolor, acrylic and mural painting, drawing, hand-painted photography, and mixed media. She will be joined by Jim Dorman, a local “musical adventurer,” who brings audiences with him on a journey of discovery.

Guests will meet artists and musicians and enjoy conversation, appetizers, and wine and beer. Each Art Hour will also include speakers or art demonstrations and will vary by topic. For more information and to RSVP, please call 503-292-6611.

A new kind of preschool in Cedar Mill

Cornell School interior

Dave and Oyendrila Kennedy are excited to introduce the community to the beautiful new preschool they have built in the Cedar Mill/Forest Heights area. The idea for the school was born years ago, when they had trouble finding a quality full time preschool for their daughter, Anya, that fit their needs. They also have a strong belief that early childhood education is as important, if not more important, than grade school and college, as it establishes a child's social, emotional, and academic trajectory.

The Cornell School combines the best aspects of leading educational philosophies to promote non-linear thinking and creativity. Their play-based activities are derived from Reggio, STEM, and Montessori programs. Small class sizes support each child's individual learning style, and foster a truly nurturing environment.

Cornell School nook

The school is set on three acres of wooded grounds that include fruit trees, open spaces, a natural stream, trails, and wildlife. It is a brand new building with large, light-filled classrooms that connect with the outdoor learning spaces. The teachers hold Masters degrees and have more than 20 years of teaching experience in private schools.

The school has a few openings for Fall 2016 and they are currently accepting applications for Fall 2017. For more information or to schedule a tour, visit www.TheCornellSchool.com or email them at thecornellschool@gmail.com.

Long-time Cedar Mill area resident and financial counselor Gail Parker is preparing to retire, and has been working to introduce her clients to her new partner, Ann Garcia, who also lives in the area. Like Gail, Ann is a fee-only (no sales of product, no commissions, just independent help with finances) financial advisor. Ann’s two children go to Sunset.

Ann is a Certified Financial Planner, which denotes a comprehensive education in all aspects of financial planning, not just investment selection or management. “As NAPFA members,” she says, “we are required to hold this designation. Earning the CFP credential is a rigorous process that includes education, a comprehensive (2 day) exam and 3 years of work experience as a financial advisor.”

Ann explains, “NAPFA is the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, of which we are members. As the name implies, it is a national organization; Gail started the local study group and now I run it, and that is how we met. As NAPFA advisors, we are fee-only and commit to being fiduciaries to our clients.”

Ann specializes in socially responsive investments, college financial aid, and retirement projections. And a potential client doesn’t need to be wealthy to benefit from her advice. She says, “I’ve yet to meet anybody I couldn’t help!”

Sunset CU supports Family Promise

Did you know that the Beaverton School District has the highest number of homeless students in the state? That’s why Sunset Credit Union has teamed up with ‘Family Promise of Beaverton’ to provide assistance to Beaverton School District students and their families who are experiencing homelessness.

Family Promise is a non-profit organization with a mission of providing temporary housing for families who have found themselves in a homeless situation. With a motto of, “Not a handout but a helping hand up,” the program has been assisting families all across the nation. The organization is now opening up to Beaverton School District families who have found themselves in a homeless situation.

“We have a great opportunity to help our neighbors who—for whatever reason—are experiencing homelessness,” said Sunset’s CEO, Rhonda Baggarley. “Last year there were more than 1,390 Beaverton School District students who had no place to call home. I know it appears to be a daunting task, but I think with the help of Cedar Mill businesses and residents, we can make a positive impact and transform the lives of many children and their families.”

The credit union has set up a Family Promise fund to collect money which will be used to provide food, school supplies, and temporary shelter for these families. If you’d like to donate or learn more about Family Promise of Beaverton, stop by Sunset Credit Union, 1100 NW Murray Blvd., #200 or give them a call at 503-643-1335.

Sunset Credit Union serves anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Washington County. Visit www.sspfcu.com to learn more.
