Children’s mural at Bible ChurchKathryn Boettcher is a mural artist and a member of the Cedar Mill Bible Church congregation. Over the last two years, she has been working with church members and staff to create a 300-foot-long mural in the hallways of the children’s area. Recently completed, the artwork warms up the long halls while imparting lessons from the church curriculum. Boettcher chose messages from the Bible and from lessons, and then used photos of children from the church in period costume, as well as animals at the Portland Zoo to illustrate the stories. She created line drawings based on the photos, and then projected them onto the walls so she could trace the lines in pencil. Over seven months, 20-30 volunteers added brown paint to the lines. The shapes were then numbered just like a giant paint-by-numbers project, and the final step was accomplished by parents and children who added colored paint during two Saturdays in September. The mural is done in a palette of pastel shades that is designed to be a calm, positive, and friendly environment for everyone who spends time in the halls. After a final bit of touch-up, the walls were sealed so they’re easy to clean. Church member and artist Jo Reimers participated in the project, and also created a set of paintings that hang in the Worship Center. Cedar Mill Bible Church is hosting a community party on Saturday December 5 from 1- 6 pm to celebrate the completion of the mural. Please stop by to enjoy the mural as well as refreshments and live music. Parking at the church is plentiful, at 12208 NW Cornell Road.
