Beaverton School District seeks candidates to serve on two task forces
Volunteerism & Engagement Task Force
District is seeking a diverse group of twelve parents and eight community members to serve
on a Volunteerism and Engagement Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to develop recom-mendations to enhance and strengthen volunteerism and engagement in the District. The research is clear about the role of parent involvement- it makes a significant difference in student achievement. In addition, community partners enrich and help students achieve in a variety of ways.

K-12 Service Learning Task Force
The Beaverton School District is seeking a diverse group of six parents and six community members to serve on the K-12 Service Learning Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to develop recommendations for a K-12 service learning plan, including a graduation requirement. Service learning is an effective instructional approach which helps students learn and apply academic skills to real problems. Through these experiences, students will show an increase in civic engagement and responsibility, and demonstrate enhanced problem-solving skills and improved ability to work in teams. Currently, Southridge High School and the Arts & Commu-nication Magnet Academy require students to complete service learning to graduate. Students K-12 regularly engage in service projects such as canned food drives, clothing drives, and community gardens.

 November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month
The Beaverton School District has identified 785 homeless students as of October 27. The count this time last year was 714; in 2008 it was 380. The Title X Homeless Education Program finds and aids these students with a variety of services to help them stay in school. Program Social Support Liaison Lisa Mentesana says, "You will undoubtedly notice an overall increase in our numbers. This is primarily due to the economy, but it also reflects what we're doing in our community. We're finding our most vulnerable children and youth, and providing valuable resources that help them stay in school. We have been able to do this through strong community awareness efforts and valued partnerships."

The Cedar Mill Business Association will hear from Lisa along with Sunshine Food Pantry founder Sharon Strauss and Christie Costello, Community Outreach Coordinator of the Domestic Violence Resource Center at the November meeting (see Meeting Announcement).
January Series programs announced
 Oak Hills Christian Reformed Church will once again be the only Oregon remote location for the thought-provoking, renowned January Series of lectures and presentations broadcast from Calvin College. Check out the website calvin.edu/january/2011/ for the schedule of speakers, including Public Broadcaster Krista Tippett, Temple Grandin, and Cal Ripken, Jr. Programs are free and open to the public, beginning Wednesday, January 5 at 9:30 am, and continuing through Tuesday, January 25. Fall Leaves—Drive In, Drop Off
Be rain-ready this fall. Help prevent flooding and protect our watershed by keeping storm drains (which lead to the nearest stream or river) clear of debris. Bring your leaves, grass clippings and a can of food to Clean Water Services' free Leaf Disposal and Food Drive from 8 am-4 pm on Saturday, November 20 at Sunset and Aloha High Schools; and Saturday, December 4 at Aloha High School and Home Depot west parking lot at 13700 NW Science Park Drive.

Arranging Flowers with the Garden Club
 The Cedar Mill Garden Club invites gardeners, wildlife lovers and flower arrangers to join us for a flower-arranging demonstration followed by some hands-on experience on November 17 at 12:30 pm. The meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 S.W.5th across from the Beaverton City Library. Bring a vase, greens, some flowers to share and a (floral) frog.
The CMGC meets fall through spring on the third Wednesday of the month to hear gardening programs from experts throughout the area. The club holds a yearly Plant Sale at the Young House (see picture) which raises money for scholarships, a herb or cottage garden at the Historic John Quincy Adams Young House, youth activities and for local botanical gardens. This year we participated in planting a wildflower garden in front of the JQA Young House.
We are currently holding potting parties for our spring plant sale and are accepting plant divisions that you would like to divide and share before winter.

 Mitten Season? At Bonnie L. Hays it's still Kitten Season!
Now that cool fall weather is finally here, it's almost mitten season. But at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro, it's still kitten season.
"If you think that it's too late in the year to adopt a cuddly little kitten, you're in for a happy surprise," says Deborah Wood, manager of Animal Services for Washington County.
"Because our summer weather lasted well into fall, we've had an extremely long kitten season. We just keep getting kittens…and kittens…and kittens…and kittens. We have a lot of warm, furry lap warmers looking for great homes," says Wood.
For those who prefer a gorgeous adult cat, the shelter is bursting at the seams with choices. "Long-haired, short-haired, active, mellow, male, female – take your pick," says Wood.
Cat and Kitten Adoption Fees Still at Summer Discounts: The summer kitten season adoption prices are still in effect. "Adult cats are only $10. Kittens are $80 for the first kitten, half-off if you adopt a second one," says Wood.
All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on shots, and test negative for cat major diseases (FIV and FeLV). Washington County area veterinarians will provide a free introductory check-up for pets adopted from the shelter, as well. "The total value of these services is about $250," says Wood.
Location/Adoption Hours: Adoption hours are 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and from noon to 5:30 PM on Wednesdays. The shelter is closed on Sundays. It is located at 1901 SE 24th Avenue in Hillsboro, just in front of Lowe's on Tualatin Valley Highway. The phone number is 503-846-7041.
Kitten Food Donations Welcome: "All our animals are fed by donations from our generous community," says Wood. "We aren't in a crisis yet, but donations of kitten food would help to make sure the cupboards stay full."
