The Cedar Mill Library is honoring the 40th anniversary of Washington County Cooperative Library Services with a free concert for all ages. Musician Sean Gaskell will perform on the West African Kora, a beautiful 21-stringed instrument that is native to the Mande peoples who live within the countries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.
Sean has studied with master Kora players in Gambia, and he travels to Cedar Mill from Asheville, North Carolina. Kora music is traditionally played by oral and musical historians known as Griots (Gree-ohs). While the Kora is only 300 years old, some commonly played songs can be traced back 800 years to the Mande empires' founding. What better way to honor WCCLS than a concert that introduces our community to a revered and time-honored musical instrument that was used to tell stories and pass on history to the next generation.
