Timberland Neighborhood Meeting
Find out about the latest plans for the commercial area of Timberland on Barnes Road. Gramor Development principals will have some updated drawings to share on how the site will look and also preview the proposed buildings. Still no news on the anchor tenant, but stay tuned.

Cedar Mill Garden Club Meeting
The Cedar Mill Garden Club’s Wednesday January 16th meeting is entitled “Flock to See the Chicken Lady” and will be held at the Beaverton Community Center 12350 S.W. 5th at Hall at 11:30 am. Learn all about chickens, plain and fancy, from speaker and owner of show poultry, Michelle Koepe.

Washington County Master Gardeners
The Washington County Master Gardener Speaker Series presents “Edible Landscaping, Vertical Gardening and Interplanting” with Jen Aron of Peaceful Gardens. Jen will introduce design techniques, including vertical gardening methods, and plant suggestions to create landscapes that are sustainable, beautiful and delicious. Jen is a Master Gardener, certified in organic gardening and Permaculture design. Local Historic District Nominations
The state advisory committee on historic preservation will meet on February 14 at Oak Hills Church to decide whether to recommend that the National Park Service place Oak Hills on the list of Historic Districts. Map Your Neighborhood Class
Statistics show that 90% of all survivors of disasters are rescued by other survivors. It may be up to you to save the life of another, or you may depend on your neighbors to rescue you or your loved ones.
We like to think, “it can never happen to me,” yet our community is vulnerable to a range of potential disasters and experts agree it’s not a question of if but when. MYN (Map Your Neighborhood) is a program designed to help neighborhoods prepare for disaster. Neighbors learn to work together as a team to evaluate their neighborhood following a disaster to increase neighbors’ capacity to survive and be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a disaster.
Neighborhood leaders complete a two-hour free “Become a MYN Organizer” program that gives them the materials and skills to reach out into their neighborhoods and implement the MYN program. Neighborhood residents learn the nine steps to take immediately following a disaster. They identify skills and equipment each neighbor has that may help in such a event, create a neighborhood map pinpointing the locations of all natural gas meters and compile a contact list that includes the names of neighborhood residents who may need extra help in a disaster such as the elderly, people with disabilities, or children whose parents may be unable to get home due to transportation disruptions.
The MYN class will be held at three different times during the months of January and February. You need attend only one class and there is no charge for the training or the materials. Award-winning lecture series continues
The award-winning January Series of Calvin College continues at the Oak Hills Community Church. This is one of 38 remote webcast locations worldwide to broadcast one of the nation’s leading lecture and cultural arts series featuring a lineup of nationally-acclaimed speakers including a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, a three-time, Emmy award-winning broadcaster, the Army’s first active-duty, blind officer, and one of Newsweek’s “150 Women Who Shake the World.”
The experts will cover a wide range of today’s most relevant topics, offering Christian perspectives on improving immigration policy and why business matters to God. They will also provide an insider’s view of the political climate in Washington D.C., discuss the history of the inaugural address just days prior to the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. The January Series lectures will be video streamed live at Oak Hills Community Church (2800 NW 153rd Ave.) from 9:30 to 10:30 am Monday through Friday. The lectures are free and open to the public.
Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy
Come behind the scenes this spring at the 2013 Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Academy. This exciting 10-week course taught by Sheriff’s Office Personnel and other agencies will cover topics such as officer selection and training, various duties within the sheriff’s office, patrol operations, investigations, tactical operations, use of firearms, jail operations, narcotics, crime scene investigations, canines, and traffic safety.
The next Citizen Academy begins Tuesday March 26 and ends on Tuesday May 28, and is free of charge. Classes are held every Tuesday evening from 6-9:30 pm. Classes are typically held in the training rooms at the sheriff’s office, which is located at 215 SW Adams Avenue in Hillsboro. To be eligible, participants must be at least 17 years of age and live in Washington County. Each academy is limited to 40 students, so please check your schedules carefully before applying for the course. Abe Lincoln in Beaverton
This January, the Beaverton Historical Society presents “An Evening with Abraham Lincoln,” on Tuesday January 8 at 7 pm. Longtime Lincoln portrayer Steve Holgate will appear in character as Lincoln and allow citizens to get to know Lincoln as he really was. The event will take place at the Beaverton Historical Society at 12412 SW Broadway Street, and is free of charge.
Washington County Forum
The schedule of January events and topics for the Washington County Forum has been announced at the forum’s website washingtoncountyforum.us.
On January 14, the forum topic will be “Mayors’ Perspective on Growth” and will include Mayors Denny Doyle of Beaverton, Jerry Willey of Hillsboro and Pete Truax of Forest Grove.
On January 21, the forum topic will be “Unincorporated areas —How should growth be handled?” with speakers Mike Dahlstrom of the Aloha Reedvile study, Karen Bolin of Aloha Business Association and Washington County Commissioner Greg Malinowski.
The Washington County Public Affairs Forum meets from 11:45 am to 1 pm at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive, across from the Evergreen movie theaters in Hillsboro. The doors open at 10:30, with a first lunch serving at 11:30 and a second at noon. The program begins at noon. The lunches are open to the public; lunch is $15, $10 for soup and salad, and $6 for iced tea or coffee only. Members pay $2 less for each option. The Forum is a neutral arena for the education of members and the public. Programs are replayed on TVCTV Channel 21 Thursday at 6 am; Channel 28 Thursday at 10 pm, Friday at 6 pm and Sunday at 3 pm; and Channel 11 Monday at 10 am.
Milltown Soccer Signup
Milltown United Soccer Club registration for spring soccer will open up on January 7. Milltown offers soccer for boys and girls ages 5-18 in the Barnes Elementary, Bonny Slope, Catlin Gabel, Cedar Hills Recreation, Cedar Mill, Cedar Park, Ridgewood, St. Pius, Sunset High School, Terra Linda, West TV, and William Walker school areas. Winter Classes at Sunset Presbyterian
Sunset Presbyterian begins two classes this month and invites the community to take advantage of these helpful resources.
DivorceCare is a 13-week program covering topics that address what you are experiencing. Each class begins with opening remarks from leaders who have been through divorce. This is followed by interactive class discussion, a 30-minute video, small group discussion time and a workbook to capture thoughts from the weekly lesson. Marriage Class: The Five Love Languages is an exciting relationship course. In this life-changing program, Dr. Gary Chapman will explain the philosophy behind The Five Love Languages, and will leave you with a clear understanding of how to apply these principles to your relationships. Naturescaping Basics class at Nature Center
Naturescaping is the practice of designing (or redesigning) your landscape using native plants so that it reduces water use and decreases stormwater runoff while saving you time, money and energy.
This free introductory workshop introduces the core concepts of naturescaping, and also explores pollution prevention through the reduction/elimination of chemical use; how native plants naturally resist pests & tolerate drought conditions while attracting native birds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to your garden; basic site planning principals; and many other great natural gardening & design tips.
Workshop participants will visit a nearby naturescaped project to see design principles in action, and receive a comprehensive workbook and a native plant to help them get started.

A Site Planning class will be offered on February 24. You must have already attended a Basic Workshop before you can sign up for this. Site Planning helps you learn how to evaluate your property for its microclimates, what to plant where, and how to draw up a site plan.
