Culinary Herbs Over the YearsThe February 16 meeting of the Cedar Mill Garden Club will include a presentation on culinary herbs by Maggie Harvey-Vinnedge of the Van Ridge Garden Club, Ridgefield, Washington. Meetings are held at the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 S.W. 5th across from the Beaverton City Library. The Hotline provides practical and impartial information about green home strategies, resources and incentives for new and existing commercial and residential projects in the region. We'll answer your questions about ways to reduce your carbon footprint, renewable energy, indoor air quality, salvage, training workshops and more. The Hotline is a bridge to the information, programs and local resources to help you be as green as you would like to be. We welcome inquiries from homeowners, renters, real estate professionals, non-profits, contractors, students, developers, business owners and design professionals in the tri-county area. Our intent is to inspire callers (not overwhelm!) to incorporate as many sustainable choices, either material or behavioral, into their projects as possible. Pancake Breakfast at Cedar Mill Elementary February 12The community is invited to attend Cedar Mill Elementary School's annual pancake breakfast fund-raiser on Saturday, February 12 from 8–11 am at the school (10265 NW Cornell Road). The event is hosted by the school's fourth-grade students, who are raising money for the culmination of their Oregon Trail study—an overnight field trip to Mt. Hood. Organized through the Multnomah Education District Outdoor School, the field trip gives the students a hands-on look at what life was like for pioneers. From packing a wagon bed with supplies to staking out part of a one-acre homestead, the students will be immersed in life on the Oregon Trail. Students and their families and teachers will be serving pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Cedar Mill Park Concert scheduled for August 5Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District has announced the schedule for their series of summer concerts in the parks. Our concert will be on Thursday, August 4 at Cedar Mill Park. Public Affairs Forum celebrates Clean Water ServicesWashington County's nationally-acclaimed sewer and storm water agency, known lately as Clean Water Services, is celebrating 40 years of service. On Monday February 7, 2011, CWS's Government Affairs manager Mark Jockers will share their story with Washington County's Public Affairs Forum (PAF). Clean Water Services is a water resources management utility committed to protecting water resources in the Tualatin River Watershed. Nearly 520,000 customers enjoy clean water and healthy rivers and streams through innovative wastewater and stormwater services, flood management projects, water quality and stream enhancement projects, fish habitat protection and more. The PAF meets from 11:45 am to 1 pm at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive, across from the Evergreen movie theaters. The doors open at 10:30, with a first lunch serving at 11:30 and a second at noon. The program begins at noon. The lunches are open to the public; lunch is $15, $10 for soup and salad, and $6 for iced tea or coffee only. Members pay $2 less for each option. Public Affairs ForumFounded in 1956, the Public Affairs Forum provides a common meeting place for the interchange of ideas and to stimulate thinking on civic matters. Each week the Forum brings together community leaders, members and guests who care about what happens in Washington County, the metro region and the state of Oregon. Speakers from government, business, science, the arts and education address the Forum. Members have the opportunity to question speakers – which sometimes is the most interesting part of the program. The Forum is a neutral arena for the education of members and the public. It endorses no particular point of view and takes no responsibility for the opinions expressed by speakers, which are not necessarily the opinions of the Forum, its members or its Board of Directors. Ridership has been fluctuating from 180 rides per day in Spring 2010 to the current 110 per day, according to TriMet spokesman Tom Mills. Transit advocate Susan Rosenthal encourages us all to "get out there and take the bus," and she points out that it is not just a way to get to the STC but also connects several neighborhoods in the area. Get schedule information and more at trimet.org/schedule/r050.htm Introduction to Rainwater Harvesting WorkshopA coalition of regional water agencies and environmental groups is inviting the public to a four-hour class to learn the basics of rainwater harvesting. Many folks in the are turn off outside water during the winter to prevent frozen pipes. A rain barrel that harvests the runoff from your roof might be just the thing to both divert water from the sewers and to provide a little water to wash off muddy boots and other uses. Or you can delve more deeply into the project and catch all your roof water. The workshop will cover rainwater collection for both urban and rural settings (typically less than 550 gallons) including:

Around 30 volunteers turned out to help plant trees and shrubs at the Tree Planting Party in the Cedar Mill Wetlands in January. Erik Mace, who organized the event with the Wetlands Conservancy, said, "We had an excellent turnout and planted over 600 trees/shrubs (550-ish bare-root plants provided by Clean Water Services and over 100 cuttings taken from the wetland south of Barnes Rd). It was a lot of fun and there were several people who showed up with their children. Mace is a member of the Washington County Joint-CPO Tree Code Group, a committee trying to establish a tree protection code for the county. Find out more at
