Fire Station relocation hearing April 21

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue has proposed building a new fire station on the northwest corner of NW Evergreen St. and Thompson Rd., just southwest of Findley Elementary. A Special Use and Development Review hearing will occur on April 21, 10 am at the Washington County Public Services Building main floor auditorium, 155 NW First Avenue in Hillsboro. Many neighbors have expressed concern about fire trucks negotiating the narrow road next to the school, especially during student arrival and pickup times. TVFR has assured the public that it can be a good neighbor.

Cedar Mill Garden Club’s 8th Annual Plant Sale

Next meeting

Heirloom Vegetables will be the topic of the Wednesday, April 20 meeting of the Cedar Mill Garden Club at the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 S.W. 5th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30p.m.  Michael Stuckey of Millenium Farms Heirloom Vegetables in Ridgefield, Washington will be the presenter.  All interested gardeners are invited to attend the free program which begins shortly before 1 pm.

The Cedar Mill Garden Club is celebrating Arbor Day and Earth Day by planting two trees at local schools, one in conjunction with the girl scouts. The girl scouts will be working toward a badge, which includes planting and care of trees; the garden club will help with the purchase price and present a short informational program about tree care at 3 pm, April 20, at West Tualatin View School.

Catlin Gabel summer programs

Summer programs return to the beautiful Catlin Gabel campus, 8825 SW Barnes Rd. from July 5 to August 5. Offerings are open to all students, even those who are not enrolled at Catlin Gabel. Families may choose from programs including sports camps, creative writing, outdoor education, filmmaking, wildlife biology, SAT prep, cooking, music, and theater, to name just a few. Our Crime Prevention Team is looking for vounteers to educate the public on community issues and crime prevention topics, and to help set up for special events, package materials, and design displays. We will teach you all that is needed!

Can you spare a few hours a week, or maybe help with specific events? We need people:

• With public speaking skills
• Who are outgoing and education-minded
• Who can listen and help solve problems
• Who can work outdoors in all kinds of weather

Greenlick invites team members to fight Lymphoma

Friends, as you may know I was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2005 and finished chemotherapy in March of 2006. I found that my consultant at OHSU had been funded by the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) and volunteered to start an LRF Oregon Chapter. I became the Chapter’s first president. Now I am asking you to help me fight lymphoma..

LRF is having its Inaugural Oregon Lymphomathon on Sunday, April 10. I hope you will be willing to join “Team Mitch,” walk the course, and raise money by getting pledges to support your effort.

The Lymphomathon is a non-competitive 5K Walk in which lymphoma survivors, caregivers, friends, and community and corporate teams gather to celebrate, honor and support one another while raising funds for lymphoma research and programming.

Volunteers ages 12-15 needed to lead Safety Town

Responsible, enthusiastic volunteers are needed to help provide a safety education program for preschool children.

Volunteers lead a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, songs, outdoor and other recreational activities that are designed to teach children 4-6 years of age how to be safe while still having lots of fun!

Volunteers gain valuable work experience while developing leadership skills and increasing student community service hour records! Volunteers must attend a staff-led training session held early in the summer and make a two-week volunteer commitment.

THPRD’s Green Gardening Fair

Bring nature to your backyard—join the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District for its annual Green Gardening Fair and Spring Native Plant Sale on Saturday, April 30.

The free event will be at the Tualatin Hills Nature Park Interpretive Center, 15655 SW Millikan Way, Beaverton, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Are you interested in attracting more birds, butterflies, pollinators and other wildlife to your garden? Native plants are an excellent way to start. Once established, they offer greater benefits to wildlife and require less care, water, fertilizers, and pesticides than non-native, ornamental plants.

“We are lucky to have such a beautiful array of native plants in our region,” said Karen Munday, program coordinator at the Nature Park Interpretive Center. “You can easily find the right native plant for any spot in your garden. Plus you can shop, talk to plant experts, and browse information from local organizations to learn more about what you can do to improve habitat in your yard.”

At the Green Gardening Fair, visitors can learn about sustainable gardening techniques through a variety of activities and information booths. They’ll get tips on how to conserve water in their yard, choose native plants, and install a rain garden.

Milltown at Timbers’ opener

Milltown Soccer Club is excited to once again be a big part of the Portland Timbers Opening Night, Thursday, April 14. This sold-out game will be the Timbers first ever, regular season, MLS game and will be nationally televised on ESPN 2.

There will be 100 Milltown soccer players aged 5-18 years of age, holding the 18 MLS flags before and during the national anthem. Milltown has worked hard with our community to create unique experiences and relationships that benefit our members and our community. This allows our rec soccer players opportunities and experiences that they will remember for life, and hopefully help fuel the pursuit of their dreams.

May 17 election candidates at Public Affairs Forum

On Monday, April 18, there will be a Candidates’ Forum at the weekly lunch meeting of the Washington County Public Affairs Forum (PAF). Candidates in contested races for the Beaverton and Hillsboro School Districts, The Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District, the Tualatin Valley Water District and the Washington County Fire District have been invited to appear and answer questions as voters prepare to mark their May 17 ballots.

The PAF meets from 11:45 am to 1 pm at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive, across from the Evergreen movie theaters in Hillsboro. The doors open at 10:30, with a first lunch serving at 11:30 and a second at noon. The program begins at noon. The lunches are open to the public; lunch is $15, $10 for soup and salad, and $6 for iced tea or coffee only. Members pay $2 less for each option.

Founded in 1956, the Public Affairs Forum provides a common meeting place for the interchange of ideas and to stimulate thinking on civic matters. Each week the Forum brings together community leaders, members and guests who care about what happens in Washington County, the metro region and the state of Oregon. Speakers from government, business, science, the arts and education address the Forum. Members have the opportunity to question speakers – sometimes the most interesting part of the program.

Programs are replayed on TVCTV Channel 21 Thursday at 6 am; Channel 28 Thursday at 10 pm, Friday at 6 pm and Sunday at 3 pm; and Channel 11 Monday at 10 am. Learn more at washingtoncountyforum.org
