Fear Free at Bethany VetOver the last few months, our doctors and staff have focused their attention on becoming a “Fear Free” clinic. Fear Free is not only a tactic, it is a certified program for veterinary facilities. This program teaches veterinarians and staff to uphold a level of care that promotes trust between veterinary staff, patients (your pets), and clients (you!). The goal of the Fear Free model is to understand how fear, anxiety, and stress are being presented by patients, and how to structure veterinary visits so stressors are alleviated as much as possible. This allows patients and clients to have positive experiences and less anxiety about future visits. We are proud to say that 100% of our doctors and 75% of our staff are now Fear Free certified! Around the clinic, you may notice some of the Fear Free techniques, such as a larger variety of treats, the use of pheromones, and the addition of medications or supplements to help keep your pet’s visit as calm and happy as possible. Bring your pet hungry! We will be sharing information about pet behavior, Fear Free techniques, and things that you can do at home to help keep your pet’s veterinary visits as happy, safe, and friendly as possible. Stash cash in this tax-free accountThe deadline is approaching to lower your 2017 tax bill by putting money into one of the best types of tax-sheltered accounts available to Americans: Health Savings Accounts or HSA’s. April 17, the deadline to file your 2017 tax return, is also the last chance to contribute money to an HSA for tax year 2017. HSAs offer a combination of tax- reducing features that is unrivaled, even by retirement plans. An HSA is an account in which you can deposit a certain amount of money each year that you can use to reimburse yourself for eligible medical expenses. Contributions can be deducted from your taxes for the tax year during which contributions are made.(Depending on your tax situation). Any gains on your contributions are tax-free. Withdrawals are tax-free when used to pay for qualifying health care expenses. There are no minimum required distributions at 701⁄2 like other retirement accounts. If the contribution goes into your HSA via payroll deduction, it is not subject to FICA. FICA, short for Federal Insurance Contributions Act, is the federal income tax that goes toward Social Security and Medicare. The bad news about HSAs is that not everyone is eligible for one. They’re designed for folks with high-deductible health insurance plans. For the 2017 tax year, the IRS defines such plans as having annual deductibles of at least: $1,300 for coverage of yourself only (rising to $1,350 for 2018), and $2,600 for family coverage (rising to $2,700 for 2018). To learn more about HSA’s or to open an HSA for yourself, contact Debbie at Sunset Credit Union at 503-643-1335. |
