Where will all the tenants go?

Once the Milltowner redevelopment is underway, existing tenants will need to find another location. Some have already moved, some are retiring, and some are still looking.

Cedar Mill News & Cedar Mill History Museum

We would love to find a new space for the Museum. Our collection of photos, objects, and stories of how people have been living here can be packed up, but we’d prefer to find someplace more permanent. All suggestions are welcome! Be sure to visit the Museum if you haven’t yet had a chance. The next weekend opening is April 21-22.

We can operate out of a home office to do the News, but again, the best solutions would be to find a place for both the Museum and the News to move into as soon as it’s feasible. It’s been fun and convenient to have a downtown location. In the meantime, we’ll keep plugging away in our little corner office.

Sunset Bingo

Chuck Richards, who founded Sunset Bingo as a fundraiser for Oregon Sports Academy, says they are looking for a new space that can hold the 200 or so players who show up for the games.

Al’s Barber Shop

Al Patershall has been talking about retiring for years, and the redevelopment is finally making that a reality. His last day will be Saturday, April 28. He worked in the shop since the mid-60s and bought it in 1973. Generations of Cedar Mill men have been getting their hair cut there. A private fundraiser for Al’s last haircut has been organized to benefit Sunset High sports.

Allstate Insurance

Reggie Reginald has already moved into the space at 12840 NW Cornell, where Bales/Findley Property Management used to be. Bales/Findley remodeled the space next door and moved in last month. We only recently learned that the building, which also houses Chrisman Frame and Stride Strong Physical Therapy, was originally the headquarters of the Wolf Creek Water District.

Davies Dog Salon

Sally Tate trimmed the last poodle on March 30. She too has been looking forward to retirement, so when she found out that the center would be closing, she decided the time was right. “My phenomenal 49-year career has been a blessing,” she said. She will keep some of her equipment so she can trim her own dogs at home, and auction off the rest.

The business was started by Sally’s mother, who named it. Sally worked with her and later took it over.

“I’ve been working on the third or fourth dog for most of my clients,” she laughs. Her gentle care for our pets’ grooming needs will be missed. She recommends Dog Gone Clean, a grooming business in the West Slope area.

Mike’s Auto Parts

Pat Mahoney hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll find a new location, or wait for one of the spaces in the new center. These days, a large part of the business is online, providing specialized and hard-to-find parts for customers from all over. He is planning to stay in business in Milltowner as long as he can.

Alan Levine CPA

Levine has also been looking for a new space. He says it’s unlikely he’ll relocate in the new center because the rent will be considerably higher. At this point, he’s planning to stay put as long as he can.

Laundromat

Owner Brian Bones is working with Bales/Findley and others to find a nearby spot to relocate. He says the business is twice as busy as it was in 1992, when he took it over. He recalls that the space next door, which was recently occupied by the insurance agent, was a dry cleaner when he began.

He has been a dealer in laundry equipment for 35 years. He’s been wanting to update the equipment in this shop for a long time, but without knowing how long it will be there, he’s held off. He’s determined to find a new space in the Cedar Mill area. He understands how important his business is to many local folks. He’ll be sticking it out until something else opens up.

Salon 503

Sara Hogan says she’s waiting until June to begin looking for a new place to do hair styling. She’s operated the salon since mid 2011, when she took it over from Mr. James, who retired.
