Farmers' Market opens May 7
By Susan Judge, Market Volunteer

Start your summer early with a visit to the Cedar Mill Farmers' Market on Saturday, May 7. The market, conveniently located in the parking lot of Sunset Mall on NW Cornell just west of SW Murray, is sponsored by the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District. "Our opening day vendors will be bringing early spring produce, cut flower bouquets, nursery plants, baked goods and variety of handmade arts and crafts," reported market manager Dina Gross. "Even with the wet spring, we'll have plenty of flowers from Vanessa's Farm just in time for Mother's Day."

flowersThe weather has been a challenge to local produce farmers, but a few early crops should be ready for the market's first day. In addition to the fresh cut flower bouquets, shoppers can expect to find freshly roasted coffee, warm kettlecorn, French pastries, and gourmet cupcakes. On May 7, be sure to wish vendor and community celebrity Nancy Olson a Happy Birthday and enjoy some birthday treats.

The Cedar Mill Farmers' Market may be smaller than some of the other more distant markets, but it makes up for it by its family-friendly atmosphere. There is plenty of free parking thanks to the support of the Sunset Mall merchants. Another feature is the special "Kids' Place" booth staffed by volunteers who offer young visitors free balloon creations and face painting. Dogs that are leashed and well-behaved are welcome too. Each Saturday the market also provides free entertainment by different local musicians.

"We're very happy to be a part of the community and help bring shoppers, farmers and crafts people together," commented Gross. "We also have a wonderful variety of musical talent in this area that we are able to showcase." The market will be open from 8 am – 1 pm every Saturday beginning May 7, continuing through the end of September, and will continue through October if weather allows. For more details and information, visit the market's website www.cmfmarket.org, or contact market manager Dina Gross at 503-913-7733.
