Downtown flowers... and weeds! For the third year, the Cedar Mill Business Association is organizing a display of hanging flower baskets all along Cornell, between Saltzman and Murray, and up Saltzman to the library. New this year is that local businesses have stepped up in a big way to support the program. The CMBA annual budget derives only from membership dues. In addition to the flower display, it pays for a program to help homeless students at Sunset High, various program-related expenses for our monthly meetings, and for an admin to keep everything organized. For the past two years, a couple of generous businesses helped pay for the flowers, but we knew we had to reach out to more businesses to make the program sustainable. A letter went out to all members and the response was terrific. More support is still needed to cover the approximately $7200 total cost of the program. Additional letters will be sent to downtown property owners, and the letter will also be distributed hand-to-hand to downtown business owners who are not CMBA members. The Garden Corner of Tualatin installs the baskets, and does nightly watering and feeding. This keeps them blooming magnificently through the spring and summer. Cornell Cleanup May 19
Although people are looking up to admire the flower baskets, they still notice the streetscape. As we do twice a year, CMBA will again carry out a weed and trash collection event from 9-11 am on Saturday, May 19. This is a great opportunity for everyone who would like to do their part to keep our community pleasant for walking, working, and shopping. No need to pre-register, just show up dressed for the weather. We'll supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Meet at the overlook area between A Cut Above and Dale St. Ages 12 and over please. The county will provide traffic control for work in the medians. Questions? contact Virginia Bruce.
