Jackie Husen Park dedication August 10

The small neighborhood park at 10955 NW Reeves Street. just east of 113th (the northern extension of Cedar Hills Bl.) is complete and ready to serve our community. The design of the park is both beautiful and useful, with a walking/jogging trail around a lawn, an imaginative play area, and most exciting—a picnic shelter! Now we'll have a place to have a barbecue picnic even when the weather is iffy!

The park is landscaped with a variety of native plants. An unimproved trail currently leads into our woodland treasure, Jordan Park, to the north. Work is scheduled next spring to make a trail segment into that park that will be partially accessible for handicapped users.

Join THPRD in welcoming this new park into the community on Wednesday, August 10 from 6-7:30 pm. They'll be grilling up hot dogs to serve with chips and soft drinks. Prizes and information about the district's other offerings along with the RecMobile and the Nature Mobile will be on hand to keep everyone busy.

Food collection at August Flea Market August 20

While we often think of donating food and other items during the holiday season, people are in need of food aid all year long. Several Washington County Farmers' Markets, including THPRD's Cedar Mill Farmers Market, are pooling resources to maximize returns for a Summer Food Drive to benefit the Tualatin Valley Gleaners, which is a partner organization of the Oregon Food Bank. Once the Blues Festival food drive is over, there's a long dry spell for food donation drives. They'll be collecting both fresh and packaged food at the August 20 session.

To contribute to that effort, food will be collected in the dining area of the Grange Hall during the August 6 Flea Market, 10 am-4 pm. Canned and packaged food is fine. Other items in demand include condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, soy sauce, syrup, and of course protein foods such as canned tuna, chicken, and other meats. Also, deodorant, diapers, shampoo, shaving cream, and so forth are happily collected and distributed by the Food Bank.

The Food Bank accepts and encourages donations of pet food as well. Sometimes food insecurity strikes and families have to choose between feeding themselves well and feeding a beloved family pet, or giving up that pet. Donations of dog and cat food are very welcome and gladly distributed by the Oregon Food Bank.

Legislative Town Hall August 13

Our State Representative Mitch Greenlick, and our State Senator Suzanne Bonamici, will hold a Town Hall meeting on Saturday, August 13 at 10 am at the Leedy Grange Hall, 835 NW Saltzman. They will discuss the recent legislative session and are glad to hear from constituents about issues that need legislative attention.

New apartment buildings on Murray

The construction project that's been progressing on the east side of Murray Bl., just north of the Sunset Highway exit, will be a 20-unit multi-family housing development consisting of two apartment buildings with associated parking. Sorry to those who were wishing for a restaurant, that lot is zoned residential!
