Second Edition clearance sale
Wednesday, August 17th is National Thrift Shop Day, so celebrate by supporting the store that supports your library! Second Edition Resale Shop is having their twice-a-year clearance sale. The shop benefits the Cedar Mill Community Library and its Bethany Branch by selling gently-used and sometimes new items donated from the community. The clearance sale will allow them to move all summer clothing out, clean the shop from top to bottom, and restock it with fall fashions and back to school apparel. The sale schedule follows:

The library and Second Edition are deeply appreciative of their generous donors and loyal customers. They invite everyone who is new to the area or has never been into the shop to stop by. Second Edition is located at12505 Northwest Cornell Road next to the Cedar Mill Library.
Libertine Deli provides breakfast/lunch catering
The Libertine Deli now offers a competitively priced, healthy breakfast and lunch catering menu, Breakfasts feature pastries and seasonal fruit platters, yogurt parfait, and a three-cheese quiche. For individual lunches they offer sandwich and salad boxes, which will be available for pickup from 10-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. They hope to connect with individuals as well as business owners. The deli will be closed during most of the month of August to allow Mellisa to tackle her very busy catering schedule, including the lunchboxes and several large events. It will be re-opening next month with a few changes.
Village Gallery News
 The Group show for August in the Village Gallery is themed "Summertime Blues" with the featured artist of the month Marcia Petty. Marcia works in mixed media, aiming to find inspiration in daily life experiences. The public is invited to an artist's reception on August 13th from 1-4 pm, where Marcia's works will be on display as well as arts and crafts from other member artists.
In August the Gallery offers some new classes for adults and youth. Up-cycle your failed paintings with Shelley Lebel's Ugly Art Workshop on Friday, August 19th from 10-2 pm. Turn your ugly art into something beautiful!
The Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday from 1-4 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. The gallery is next to the Cedar Mill Library at 12505 NW Cornell Rd. Contact them at 503.644.8001 or stop by to register for classes.
UPS Store© Network equips small businesses with tools to succeed
As of July 18, the UPS Store© network announced that it will launch a Facebook contest called "The Promotion Promotion," designed to arm small business owners with tools and resources to promote their business. The grand prize winner will receive an integrated marketing campaign valued up to $50,000. Doner, The UPS Store network's advertising agency of record, will work with the grand prize winner to examine the business' needs, develop a marketing plan, produce "creative" and run it in appropriate media. Small business owners can enter the contest by visiting The UPS Store corporate Facebook page. The contest runs through August 31, when submissions will be evaluated by a panel of experts, and the winner will be chosen based on the contestant's passion for small business. The Promotion Promotion sweepstakes will also award up to $3,000 in weekly prizes, available online.
In addition, The UPS Store network will offer Facebook-only coupons for discounts on business-related services at participating The UPS Store franchise locations. Starting the second week, fans choose the next week's offer by crowd-sourcing via Facebook Questions.

Electronics Unlimited offers back to school computer tune-up

Yoga for the carefree and care-worn
For parents who may be looking for fun, kid-friendly activities in August, Santosha Yoga in Bethany Village is running a special five-week session. They offer family yoga (parent + kids ages 2-5) on Wednesdays at 10:30 am, beginning kids (ages 5-7) on Tuesdays at 4 pm, and Zen Kids (ages 8-12) on Mondays at 4 pm. Santosha has priced their classes five for the price of four, so that if families head out for a week of vacation they will still receive a great value.
Also, though most of us can easily accelerate from zero to sixty in a heartbeat, it's difficult to "decelerate" from sixty to zero just as fast. Simple is best
The first week of August is "National Simplify Your Life Week", and Beth Giles, a professional organizer with NW Organizing Solutions, suggests a few things to consider as you strive to live a simpler life.
De-clutter your space. Every item you own comes with responsibilities to house and maintain it. Remember the "one in, one out" rule. For every item you bring into your home, whether it's clothing, decoration or housewares, you should remove another item. There are people and places that would benefit greatly from your "discards."
Take a look at what is on your calendar, and rethink the commitments you have. Can you delegate some of your responsibilities? Remember that by saying "yes" to a commitment, it means you are saying "no" to something else, and that every minute of your day or every inch of your home does not need to be occupied with something. Allow yourself time to relax and open space in your home to enjoy.
Write a clear to-do list. Always start your items with an action verb and make the tasks small enough to handle. When heading out the door, make an errands list to help you avoid making several trips and wasting time.

Cedar Mill Chiropractic is growing
Cedar Mill Chiropractic is moving and will be located down the street at 12923 NW Cornell, Suite 201 (upstairs from Pars Market and across the hall from Tint and Sunset Yoga). They will be closed on Friday, August 26 and will reopen in the new location on Monday, August 29.
They are excited to be adding rehab services and to be welcoming another massage therapist to their team.
Yoga by the river
Join Nina Pileggi of Sunset Yoga, and a small group of yoga students from September 30 through October 1 for a weekend getaway to the Nehalem River. They will be staying at Sandy Crinklaw's Coastal Mountain Sport Haus, located near Mist, Oregon, just 50 short miles from Beaverton. All levels of students are welcome to join them at the retreat.

Paladan Elementary opening
Paladan Elementary, the first private elementary school for academically gifted children in the Portland area, will be opening in Bethany Village September 12. In addition to the basics—humanities, mathematics and science—they offer Chinese, music, wellness, critical thinking, physical education, yoga, history, public speaking, technology, and art. They incorporate inquiry-based learning, cross-subject integration, critical thinking strategies and real-world applications into their educational model in a meaningful, cohesive and enjoyable way.
 Though students start their day with their chronological peers, they then "migrate" to the appropriate classroom based on their ability. Students are assigned a level for math, humanities, science, and Chinese after their initial placement testing and interview.
At a time when most elementary school classrooms weigh in at 29-32 students, Paladan's student to teacher ratio is only 12:1. This low ratio allows personalized lesson plans to be fully implemented, and it is essential for their experiential and inquiry-based format, which makes learning memorable and fun.
Other unique features include the school's dedication to attend to the social and emotional needs of gifted children, maintain strong rapport and involvement with parents, and encourage social responsibility and stewardship for our natural resources.
To be considered for admission, students must be identified as talented and gifted (TAG) at the 97th percentile or above on a standardized, national test of mental ability or academic achievement. Once the basic criteria for giftedness is met, the Admissions Review Committee focuses on the student's eagerness to learn, ability to work positively and respectfully with others, emotional readiness and teacher recommendations.
