Oak Hills to host Multi-family Garage Sale
The Oak Hills Community-wide Garage Sale will take place September 7-8 from 10 am to 3 pm. Over 40 households in the Oak Hills area are expected to participate. Maps of all garage sale locations in the Oak Hills neighborhood are available at most participating households.
Volunteer at CMCL
With summer ending, the wonderful summer volunteers are leaving the Cedar Mill Community Library, Bethany Branch and Second Edition Resale Shop to return to school and jobs, leaving volunteer openings for all sorts of positions. We have openings in book shelving, media specialists (DVD, CD, Books on CD), Off Loaders (getting newly returned materials onto the right carts prior to shelving) in the libraries. In the Second Edition Resale Shop, a permanent fundraiser for the two libraries, we have openings for Cashiers and Sales Associates.
All volunteers need to be at least 15 or in 9th grade. Media Specialists and Sales Associates need to make a commitment for two-three hours shifts weekly for at least three months; all others positions require a six-month commitment.

AARP to Hold Driving Skills Class
The next session of the AARP Driver Safety Class will run from September 7 through September 14. The class is designed to sharpen the skills of any drivers over age 50. Attending and completing the class may also make drivers eligible for an insurance discount. Classes are three hours long, lasting from 9 am to 12 pm and the cost for the entire week of classes is $12 -14 dollars. Payments can be made to the instructor on the first day of class.

Local Club Supports Moms
The Portland West Hills chapter of the International MOMS club will be holding their annual open house at 9:30 am on Thursday September 13. The MOMS club offers daytime support for stay-at-home or part-time working moms in the Cedar Mill, Rock Creek and Bethany areas. New members are welcome at any time. Pioneer School Comes to Beaverton
The Beaverton Historical Society monthly presentation will take place on Tuesday September 11 from 7-8:30 pm at the Beaverton History Center, 12412 SW Broadway St in Beaverton.
At the September meeting, an interactive presentation entitled “Get Schooled, 1860’s Style” will teach participants about the one-room schoolhouse experience of nineteenth century students. Ellen Crauthers, a former homeschool teacher, will come from Butteville Academy’s Living History program to teach a class as a pioneer teacher called “Miss Elliott.” Attendees will be “students” for the classroom. Students are introduced to the etiquette of the 1863 school day, learn about the history of our flag, and work on arithmetic problems from a text actually used during the 1860’s. Crauthers and her program are enthusiastic about showing and telling history in a way that makes pioneer history come to life.
Safety Fair for Women
The Washington County Sheriff's Office invites women over 14 years of age to participate in a free Women's Safety Fair. This fair will provide women the opportunity to attend the personal safety course titled "Power Curve-Increasing Self Defense Options for Women." The course is designed to empower women by giving them some basic self-defense tools that will help them maintain their personal safety, and successfully confront and survive potentially dangerous situations with a focus on situational awareness and training in physical self-defense techniques will provide options to reduce the risk of abuse and personal attack. The course will be taught on Saturday October 13, with registration at 8 am. From 11:30 am - 1:30 pm a light lunch will be provided and participants will be able to attend a vendor fair, which will be focused on safety, security, and wellness for women. Attendance is free of charge.
Bethany Boulevard “Meet the Contractor” September 27
Washington County invites local residents to attend a “Meet the Contractor” open house for the upcoming NW Bethany Boulevard improvement project on Thursday September 27 from 5 – 7:30 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church on 14986 NW Cornell Road.
This project will make much needed safety and traffic capacity improvements for all modes of transportation. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2012 with completion anticipated to occur by June 2014. The open house will provide an opportunity for the public to meet the selected contractor and to learn more about the construction schedule. In addition to the contractor, staff from the County, design engineers WH Pacific and Parsons Brinckerhoff will be available to answer questions. THPRD Park Volunteers Needed
The Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District loves to involve the community in their local natural area restoration efforts. Several projects are looking for volunteers interested in maintaining and protecting local natural areas.
SOLVE Beach & Riverside Cleanup at Bluffs Park will be removing English Ivy from the eastern section of Bluffs Park from 9 am-12 pm on Saturday September 22. If possible, please bring a shovel, set of loppers, heavy-duty work gloves and a re-usable water bottle to drink from throughout the event. Extra tools, gloves, snacks and a water cooler will be provided. This part of Bluffs Park is just north of Bonny Slope Elementary/ Volunteers will meet at the trailhead at the end of South Drive, which is just off of NW Big Fir Circle.

TriMet Changes Effective in September
Beginning Tuesday, September 4, TriMet Line 50-Cedar Mill will operate on a revised schedule. Line 50 buses will run about every 50 minutes instead of every 30 minutes. The first three trips on the evening loop from Sunset Transit Center (3:06 pm, 3:45 pm and 4:15 pm) will be discontinued. Line 50 was one of eight bus lines that had trips eliminated due to low ridership.
Also, effective Saturday, September 1, TriMet is raising most fares and eliminating all fare zones, including the Free Rail Zone. This change means a valid fare will be required to ride MAX Light Rail in Downtown Portland and the Lloyd District.
TriMet is also moving to a simpler fare system with one fare for each rider category. TriMet decided on the service changes during its Fiscal Year 2013 budget process. The agency faced a $12 million shortfall stemming from the slow economic recovery, potential cuts in federal operating funds and union contract issues. In addition to the Line 50 schedule changes, 30 other bus lines face changes. Election Season topics at County Forum
The Washington County Public Affairs Forum meets at the Tanasbourne Old Spaghetti Factory at 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive, Hillsboro. Meetings are open to the public. Attendance is free but Forum members pay less for lunch options and beverage service. See washingtoncountyforum.org for more information.

Cedar Mill Garden Club News
The Cedar Mill Garden Club is an active organization with field trips and several club projects. Proceeds from their plant sales and events go toward scholarships, botanical gardens, the Historic John Quincy Adams Young House and community projects in and around Cedar Mill.
Wednesday September 19, CMGC will kick off the year with a talk and slide presentation by Seabright Gardens, a premier Oregon Hosta nursery and seller of other fine shade plants such as ferns and Epimediums. The group meets at the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 SW 5th (5th & Hall, conveniently located across from the Beaverton City Library) at 11:30 am for brief business, horticulture, question and answer and bird discussions. The program begins at 1 pm after refreshments and social time. All interested gardeners are welcome.
