Safeway remodels

The Cedar Mill Safeway, at Murray and Cornell, is undergoing an extensive remodeling. They’re reconfiguring several areas of the store, including turning the Starbuck’s kiosk 90° and adding an outdoor seating area; moving the floral counter to the south wall to allow more space for display; and repainting the exterior.

Local images will be featured on interior walls, including some from the Cedar Mill Historical Society collection. The work is expected to be complete by November.

Bales drops garden supplier, adds sushi

You’ve probably noticed the absence of the garden shop near the east entrance of the store. They’re looking for a new supplier, hopefully in time for fall planting.

The new sushi case on the south end of the cheese counter is filled with delicious freshly made sushi, courtesy of Bik. He grew up in Burma, and immigrated to Georgia, where he worked as a chef. He decided that wasn’t the life for him and so he learned to make sushi, and recently moved to the area to supply our cravings! His company, Family Fresh Sushi, also offers platters and party trays. He’s a delightful guy, so stop by and say hi, grab a box or two, and think of them for your next party.

Bethany Vet celebrates 20 years with Yappy Hour

Saturday, September 8, 4-6 pm, Bethany Family Pet Clinic

Come join us for Yappy Hour to celebrate our 20th anniversary! Bethany Family Pet Clinic will host an open house with music, appetizers, desserts, wine tasting, and non-alcoholic drinks. We would like to show our appreciation for being able to serve you and your pets these past 20 years in Bethany.

Kristi Roberts—Children’s Art Classes

Mondays: 3:45-4:45 pm for ages 7-11 years; Mondays: 5-6 pm for ages 11-16 years

Come join an exciting class learning a variety of art. I will develop your child’s art ability where they are at and give them an opportunity to try out different mediums so they can find what they enjoy. We will do units in drawing, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, clay and mixed media. I teach fine art concepts and techniques with each lesson. We explore a variety of subjects including landscapes, people, faces, animals, cartooning and perspective. This is a weekly class and you will need to register a month ahead in order to hold your spot for that month.

Leslie Boyce—Watercolor Elements

Join me for a six-week class to learn basic watercolor techniques as we practice painting different elements: flowers, skies, rocks/mountains, water, etc. We will experiment with different styles of each element using value contrast, color theory and principles of composition.

Mary Burgess—Painting Portraits in Watercolor

Let's take the fear out of painting faces! In this class, students will be guided through the steps to understanding facial structure, proportions, features and skin tones while capturing a likeness of the subject. Each session will focus on one aspect of portrait painting and will include activities to reinforce important concepts.

Elizabeth Higgins – Gelli-Plate Printing & Collage two-day workshops

Saturday and Sunday, September 15 -16, 9 am-12 pm; OR Saturday and Sunday, November 10-11, 9 am-12 pm

Print your own unique papers and then collage with them in this two-day workshop. On Saturday, we will make colorful textured papers using a Gel printing plate (www.gelliarts.com), texture tools and acrylic paints. Sunday will be spent making collages with these papers. In addition to learning printmaking techniques, students will also learn elements of design as they compose finished collages suitable for greeting cards or framed works of art. 

Susan Pfahl—Copperplate Calligraphy

Thursdays, Oct 4, 11, 18, 25, 7–9 pm

Learn Copperplate Calligraphy! As the ability to refine metals grew, it became possible to replace square ended pens with pointed pen nibs. A series of cursive writing styles soon emerged. These styles are still used today for highly formal documents and invitations. Copperplate is the predecessor of the cursive style handwriting most of us learned in grade school. We will also play with flourishing.

International speaker, author and memory care specialist presents at Touchmark

David Troxel, an international leader on Alzheimer’s disease who co-created a revolutionary approach for caring for people with dementia, will speak on trends in care and the innovative approach. Troxel is the co-author of “The Best Friends™ Approach to Dementia Care” as well as five other books. Now used around the world, the Best Friends Approach is built on a seemingly simple premise: what people living with memory loss need most is a friend—a best friend. Troxel teaches caregivers and professionals how to understand and fulfill the Best Friends role, including special caregiving techniques and tools. His Portland presentation—Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care: The Year Ahead—will address current trends, look at the future of dementia care and offer practical caregiving tips that families and professionals can use to help individuals with dementia lead the best possible life.

There are two opportunities to hear Troxel and visit with him: A luncheon presentation at 11:30 am and a happy hour presentation at 6 pm. Both presentations are open to the public, and there is no charge, but seating is limited. All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of “A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care.”
