Garden Club meeting

"Attracting Birds to Your Backyard," will be presented by Scott Lukens of the Backyard Bird Shop for the February 15th meeting of the Cedar Mill Garden Club. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 S.W. 5th across from the Beaverton City Library. The event is open to the public at no charge.

Project FeederWatch

Interested in bird watching? Sign up for the 2011-2012 season of Project FeederWatch, which runs through April 6. Participants watch birds on and off in their yards during a weekly two day period for as little or as much time as they like. Tualatin Valley Gleaners seed swap

Are you a gardener who has extra seeds to share and trade? Did you just divide some plants? Have extra plants or bulbs to share or swap? Are you a seed saver and want to share your seeds? Cleaning up your seed box? Cleaning out your pantry?

The Tualatin Valley Gleaners is hosting the first annual Seed/Plant/Seedling Swap and Share Garden Resource Fair at the Beaverton Community Center at 12350 SW 5th Street on February 25 from 10 am-noon.

Seeds, plants, non-perishable food, and tools will be accepted at the event to help support the Tualatin Valley Gleaners— a non-profit supplemental food program that helps out local families.

Garden Club Scholarship

The Pioneer District Garden Clubs, Inc. is excited to once again offer a $1,000 Scholarship to a legal resident of Columbia, Washington, or Yamhill Counties for the 2012-13 academic year. Deadline for applying is March 15.

Students must be enrolled full-time at an Oregon community college or four year college/university in the sophomore, junior, or senior year with a 3.25 GPA. Applicants must major in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany, environmental control, city planning, land management, or related subjects.

Parents of Teens events

The group Parents of Teens Community will host guest speakers in February and March to speak on topics of interest to parents. On February 8, Sabrina Walters MA, LMFT, LPC will present “Life Under Pressure: The Teen Years.” Walters will speak on the differences between the world parents grew up in and today’s tech-driven world, and strategies to bridge the divide. On March 14, school counselor Michelle Solberg will present “Dealing with Bullying,” discussing things parents need to know so they can help their teens... whether they are the target, the bystander, or the bully. Senator, Representatives to speak at town hall meetings

On March 10 at 2 pm, Senator Elizabeth Steiner-Hayward and Oregon House Representatives Mitch Greenlick and Chris Harker will hold a Town Hall meeting to report on the February legislative session. The event will occur at the Cedar Mill Community Library upstairs meeting room.

Aloha library fundraiser

The Aloha Community Library Association will host its first Book Donation Drive and Book Sale Fundraiser.

The association will accept book and media donations on February 18 and 25, from 10-4 pm at the Aloha Community Library, 17684 SW Farmington Rd, Suite E. English and Spanish language materials are needed. Media such as DVD’s, CD’s and Blu-Ray discs will also be accepted. Financial donations are warmly welcomed. Donated materials will either be used to build the library’s collection or will be resold to raise funds to help the library open in June 2012.

The Book Sale Fundraiser will be held on March 10 from 10 am-4 pm at the same location. Volunteers will staff the collection and sale, and board members will be available to answer questions. Public input is welcomed and invited regarding any and all aspects of the library. Come help build the Aloha Community Library, book by book. Visit www.alohalibrary.org for more information.

Beaverton city updates at Neighborhood Meetings

Mayor Denny Doyle will be attending upcoming Beaverton Neighborhood Association Committee (NAC) meetings in February and March to give a city update for 2012. Each meeting will also include a question and answer session with the Mayor.

“The Mayor’s visit to our NAC is a great chance for neighbors to learn more about their city, meet the Mayor, and get some exposure to the importance of getting more involved in their NAC,” said Tammy Bass, Highland NAC Chair, who is hosting an update on Feb. 9.

Three combined NAC meetings are scheduled. Refreshments will be provided at each meeting and all are welcome to attend. The joint meeting will occur February 9 at 7 p.m. at the Beaverton Resource Center, 12500 SW Allen Boulevard. Neighborhoods invited include Central Beaverton, Five Oaks/Triple Creek, Highland, and West Beaverton. The Highland NAC is hosting.

Multnomah County road survey

Multnomah County would like to know what you think about county roads. Results from a short online survey (www.multco.us/roads/survey) received by February 29 will be used to evaluate customer satisfaction of road services. Input from road users helps determine how and where resources are used. You don’t have to be a Multnomah County resident to take the survey.

Multnomah County jurisdiction spans 263 miles of roads in unincorporated areas (suchas Sauvie Island, Corbett, Riverdale and the Northwest hills) and 27 miles of urban roads in Fairview, Troutdale and Wood Village.

Road maintenance includes paving, vegetation maintenance, lane striping, drainage, signage, mowing, snow plowing and emergency response.

Public input has helped shape county road services in recent years. When funding levels declined in 2008, public input was used to re-prioritize road service levels. For example, roadside mowing was reduced in some areas and administrative cuts were made. These changes helped the county increase its road paving and chip seal program the last two years.

Cedar Mill Elementary pancakes

Cedar Mill Elementary invites the public to attend the school’s annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on February 11 from 8-11 am at the school on 10265 NW Cornell Rd.

Cedar Mill fourth graders, who will be serving pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice, will host the event. Donations will be gratefully welcomed.

Money raised at this event will be used to help pay for an overnight field trip to the Oregon Trail. The field trip will give students a hands-on-look at what life was like for pioneers.

TriMet open house

Trimet is having an open house on Saturday, February 11th from 1-3 pm at the Beaverton Library to discuss its' budget shortfall. The agency will be reviewing the financial situation and discussing ptions for the future. If you missed the session at the CPO 1 meeting, here’s another chance to weigh in on service options.

Recycle your styrofoam

Feb 11, 9 am to noon. Styrofoam recycling fundraiser at Skyline School, 11536 NW Skyline Blvd. We will be accepting CLEAN hard block styrofoam and CLEAN styrofoam peanuts. No food trays or soft styrofoam. Please bag block styrofoam and peanuts separately, thank you! A donation of $5/carload or $10/minivan or pickup truck load is appreciated. THPRD Committee Opening

Applications are being accepted through February 17 for six positions on the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District's Parks Bond Citizen Oversight Committee.

The committee's purpose is to ensure that the Park District meets the objectives of its voter-approved $100 million bond measure and uses the funds as planned. Members serve two-year terms and may be reappointed for two additional terms.

The committee has a capacity of 12 positions and meets four times per year. Meetings are usually held at 6 p.m. on Thursdays and last about two hours. Members focus on delivery of the overall bond measure obligations, not specific projects or activities.

Due to the complexities of bond implementation and the significant dollar amount associated with the measure, THPRD welcomes applications from professionals in real estate, finance, auditing, public budgeting, banking, general business, and law. However, any district resident is eligible to apply.

Applicants must live within THPRD boundaries. The THPRD Board of Directors will review applications and consider making initial appointments at their March 5 meeting.
