AARP Safe Driving Class

On June 15 and 22 from 9-12, an AARP Driver Safety Program will be offered at the Cedar Mill Community Library. This six-hour classroom safe driving class, given in two 3-hour parts, typically qualifies drivers for an insurance discount if 55 and older. $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-AARP members.

Garden Club meeting

All gardeners are welcome to attend the presentation "Exciting Perennials for the Adventurous Gardener" presented by Pat Thompson of the Secret Garden Growers at the May 16 meeting of the Cedar Mill Garden Club. The meeting and social time begins at 11:30 am and the program starts at 1 pm The group meets monthly at the Beaverton Community Center, 12350 S.W. Fifth. Parents of teens

The Parents of Teens Community is hosting an event on teaching teens good communication skills on May 16 at 7 pm at Cedar Mill Bible Church, 12208 NW Cornell Rd. The talk, titled "Let's Talk Like Adults,” prepares your teen to have healthy communication in relationships. Everyone is welcome. Our speakers, John & Pauline Garney, have grown children and have been teaching communication skills to young people for eight years. The Parents of Teens Community is a group of parents who share what helps in supporting their teenagers.

Sunset Band

Sunset High School's annual Spring Awards Band Concert and Silent Auction will be held Thursday, May 17, in the Sunset High School Auditorium. Doors open at 6 pm and performances begin at 7 pm. Admission is free; $5 donation per attendee is suggested. The Concert will be lead by Sunset's Band Director, Gregory Hall. Senior students and outstanding volunteers will also be recognized.

Sunset's Spring Band Concert will include performances by Sunset's Concert and Wind Ensemble bands and a silent auction that features over $10,000 in donated prizes and services from local and regional supporters. Money raised at the annual Silent Auction will be used to support all of the band programs, with a special focus on replacing aging musical equipment and increasing the scholarship programs.

Sunset Lions golf tourney

The Sunset and Beaverton Lions Club is hosting a charity golf event on June 22 at 1 pm at the Charbonneau Golf Course. Come and enjoy a great day of golf and help Gales Creek Diabetes Camp and Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind raise needed money. The Lions Clubs are involved in many local service projects. These include providing eyeglasses and hearing aides to low income people, and supporting various youth projects such as providing resources for Beaverton School District homeless students and youth drop in centers.

Westview Drama Camp

Westview High School Theatre will be hosting a drama camp June 18-22 from 9-3. Campers must be entering 3rd-8th grade in the fall. The camp culminates in a final performance. The cost is $200. For applications, visit here. Deadline to register is May 15.

Local teen in pageant program

Kyra Walters of Cedar Mill has been selected as a state finalist for the National American Miss Oregon Jr. Teen title. National American Miss is a natural pageant program that encourages girls to believe in themselves, set goals and work hard. Kyra has learned business skills such as resume writing, interviewing, public speaking, sales, and making a good first impression. At each competition, emphasis is placed on inner beauty, poise, confidence, academics and giving service.

Kyra's volunteer projects this year include two food drives for the Oregon Food Bank, and working in their Volunteer Action Center for over 20 hours. She also raised money to purchase 65 pairs of new pajamas for the Clothing Closet, raised $300 for the Oregon Humane Society, and collected $200 for UNICEF. She enjoys volunteering so much that she created a website called caringkid.com to encourage other kids to volunteer their time and talents as well.

The Oregon state finals will take place over Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-28 at the DoubleTree at Lloyd Center. Tickets to the finals are $15 each, but formal wear presentations, personal introductions and optional competitions are free to watch. Kyra will be competing in the following optional competitions: Talent, Actress, Spokesmodel, Casual Wear, Photogenic, Volunteer Service, and Best Resume. Kyra, age 14, is the daughter of Todd and Andrea Walters and attends the Arts and Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton. She enjoys singing, acting, film-making, and creating anime and her goal is to one day be as successful as Angelina Jolie as both an entertainer and volunteer.

Beaverton and Sherwood's shared history

Come and enjoy a presentation by June Reynolds, President of the Sherwood Historical Society that explores how Beaverton history intersects and parallels the history of Sherwood, Oregon. The Red Electric Train crossed our paths and a common ancestral history dates back to the pioneers and continues forward. June will highlight, in her lecture and power point presentation, the agricultural roots back to the geographical landform of the past.

Explore new cultures without leaving your home!

High School students from Brazil, Sweden, Spain, Vietnam, Austria, Denmark, South Korea, China, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Japan and France and many other countries are waiting and hoping you will volunteer to be their host family for the /13 school year.

Students come with a desire to be a member of an American family, have good English skills, full health insurance and their own personal spending money. Families are asked to provide a loving home as well as a bed (shared room is okay with similar age range) and family meals. Teenagers of your own are not required; young families as well as empty nesters can apply to be hosts.

Terra Nova HS Student Art Sale and Auction May 17

The public is invited to the Third Annual Terra Nova High School Student and Community Art Sale and Auction, featuring the grand opening of the student-run Nova Records, Thursday, May 17, from 6-8 pm at the school, 10351 NW Thompson Road, Portland.

20% of all proceeds will go to the Terra Nova Art Fund and 80% will go directly to student artists. This is an opportunity for students at Terra Nova High School to understand the value of their creativity as demonstrated through their works of art.

The evening will feature live music courtesy of Nova Records, a student-run recording studio for up-and-coming young singers, musicians and bands. Work recorded will be available for download on the Nova Records website. For more information, contact Maryliz Herron at 503-297-1566.

Washington County Public Affairs Forum schedule

May 7: Democrats and Republicans in uncontested primary election races. Candidates appearing without their opponent from Senate and House Districts in, or partially in, Washington County.

May 14: The remainder of Democrats and Republicans in uncontested primary election races.

May 21: Topic 1—Primary Election Analysis with Jim Moore. Topic 2—Consumer Protection and the Oregon Department of Justice with an Advocate from the D.O.J.

May 28: Memorial Day Holiday – No Forum

June 4: Topic 1—Sex trafficking in Oregon and the Portland Area. Speaker: Esther Nelson – Sexually Exploited Youth Program Affiliate of Sexual Assault Center. Topic 2—Beaverton Police Officers' involvement. Speaker: Officer Chad Opitz.

The Forum meets over lunch every Monday at the Tanasbourne Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive, Hillsboro. There is no charge for admission. The cost of lunch pays for the room. Since this is how we can afford to not have an admission charge we strongly encourage you to buy lunch.
