Sunset students win at the National Speech and Debate Tournament
Congratulations to Shreemoyee Saha and Saikapish Sahu, two rising juniors from Sunset High School, semi-finalists in Congressional Debate at the National Speech and Debate Tournament. Awarded the Senator Lugar Medal of Honor, these two students were Oregon’s highest performers in Congressional Debate in the seven years of the tournament’s history. Shriya Marla, Anjali Sanjeepan, and Chelsea Teh also made it to the first elimination round of their supplemental speech events.
Held in Des Moines, Iowa, the National Speech and Debate Tournament had 6,700 competitors across 1,500 schools throughout every state in the country—the biggest tournament to date. The Congressional Debate, split into two sections, House and Senate, had over 650 competitors. Around 450 in House and 200 in Senate; one of the most competitive events in the tournament.
Sunset High School has one of the state’s top speech and debate teams, with students competing in almost 20 events. Being solely student-led and student-coached in events, Nationals was an enormous experience.
Milltown United Soccer Club
We offer recreational soccer to kids from Kindergarten through high school and we are currently forming teams for Fall season soccer. Many of our age groups are full, but we do have room in several age groups, especially Kindergarten and 1st grade. Please visit our website for registration details.
Milltown would like to make a special callout for our High School co-ed program. High schoolers participating at any level on a high school team are not eligible for this program, but for those who only want to commit to a rec level and/or do not make a high school team, this program is a fun way to continue to enjoy the game. If you have a 9-12th grader that would be interested in a fall co-ed team, please visit the Milltown Soccer website for details or reach out to Milltownregistrar@gmail.com for more information.

Explore a Career in the Fire Service: Career Day
Saturday, October 12, 8-5:30, 12400 SW Tonquin Rd., Sherwood, application required, deadline August 31
Career Day offers an opportunity for adults who may be interested in a career in the fire service to learn more about job requirements and TVF&R. It includes hands-on experiences in primary firefighter responsibilities as well as presentations about station life, career and volunteer opportunities, the hiring process, emergency medical services, fire prevention, public safety education, and more. Participants will rotate through activity stations at the Training Center and have a chance to talk with education partners from several colleges and universities about their respective emergency medical services and fire science programs.
“One of the things I’m passionate about is creating a fire department that is welcoming to everyone,” said TVF&R Fire Chief Deric Weiss. “I want young people to understand how the fire service works, how they can help create safer communities, and how they can be a part of our organization. Our ranks should better reflect the community we serve. Career Day is a great opportunity to learn about firefighting, emergency medical care, fire safety, and stewardship.”
The application period opens August 1, and TVF&R will select as many as 50 participants for Career Day. The deadline to apply is August 31 but may close prior to that date if the District receives enough applications for consideration. Candidates interested in applying for TVF&R’s Career Day must be 18 or older and can apply online on the TVF&R website under “Career Events.
