History in the News August 2023
Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) announced this month that they are honored to receive a grant award of $17,310 from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s (OPRD) Preserving Oregon Grants, to complete structural repair work on the wood foundation sill of the John Quincy Adams Young (JQAY) House on Cornell. OPRD oversees the Preserving Oregon Grant, which is used to help preserve properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, such as the JQAY house. The grant requires a one-to-one match, meaning THPRD will be utilizing other grant funding to help complete the repair work later this year.

Cider Festival update
The Cedar Mill Cider Festival has been sponsored by the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD) since 2007. (With two years off because of COVID, this marks our 15th event!) The festival is a local celebration of food, music, and history. This year’s festival will feature music, barbecue, freshly pressed apple cider, and fun for the whole family.
In first year, 988 crisis line helps more people than ever
Over the past year, Oregon’s 988 crisis call centers provided mental health support during more than 53,000 calls, texts and chats—a significant increase from before. Prior to the launch of 988 last summer, people called a 10-digit number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which did not have texting or chat features.

Cedar Mill Community Club updates
Some changes have been made in the organization of the Club: Virginia Bruce has stepped back from the leading the Club and has asked Jan Dempsey to facilitate it. We have three upcoming events that will need our immediate attention at our September meeting: the Cider Festival, Sunday, September 24, needs volunteers; Adopt A Block organization and implementation, which Ric Battaglia has said he may chair; and our Holiday Tree Lighting, which Chris Mattocks will organize.
