Tips from your local credit union: Time to transition from summer to school!
Back to school season is often frenzied. After a relaxing summer, you’re thrown into a new routine. There are open houses to attend, teacher meetings, sports and after school activities, and the dreaded homework time, all of which take a while to get used to. Here are some tips that’ll make the back to school rush feel just a little more calm.
Shared calendar. If you’re a family with multiple people scheduled for multiple activities, a shared calendar is non-negotiable. It can be managed however you’d like. Some people like a written calendar in the kitchen that everyone can see, others manage via Google calendars or an app. Whatever it is, make sure that everyone is on the same page with who has to be where on what night.
Meal plan. Another thing to work out while you are planning your schedule is meals. Once you see what your week looks like, you may decide to meal prep on Sunday to have a fridge full of food for the week, or it may be a week of pulling things out of the freezer. Whatever you decide, it’s helpful to have a plan going into the week so you don’t get completely derailed with last minute food-making duties.
Have a designated space for homework. Parents know how difficult it can be for kids to go from playtime to study time. Having a dedicated study space at home can definitely help. Ideally, this should be a quiet spot conducive to productivity. Avoid setting up a desk in an area where they can easily be distracted by the TV, loud noises, or other family members.
Designate some screen time rules. If you got a little lax this summer with the screen time, know you aren’t alone. If you want to make sure to set some rules into place for the school year though, you should start getting into that routine now. Talk to your kids about whatever boundaries you want them to follow before it becomes a fight.

The best news for the real estate market in 15 months!
The average rate on a 30-year mortgage eased this week to its lowest level in 15 months, welcome relief for home buyers navigating a housing market that remains out of reach for many Americans. The rate fell to 6.46%. A year ago, the rate averaged 7.23%. Mortgage rates are expected to continue trending lower overall this year, as signs of waning inflation and a cooling job market have raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut its benchmark interest rate at its policy meeting in September, which would be the first such easing in four years. Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, suggests “rates will gently slope downward through the end of the year.”With a 23-year high of 7.79% in October, the average rate on a 30-year mortgage has mostly hovered around 7% this year—more than double what it was just three years ago. But this month, the average rate has made its biggest downshift in more than a year.
The recent pullback in mortgage rates overall has sparked a pickup in applications for home refinancing loans, which are 23% higher than a month ago, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Applications for home purchase loans have lagged, however. To generate buyer demand, rates likely will need to decline another percentage point. The higher rates, which can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, have kept many would-be homebuyers on the sidelines, extending the nation’s housing slump into its third year. Owners with a below 3% interest rate aren’t willing to give up their low rate to move, often choosing to remodel to get what they want.
Most economists expect the average rate on a 30-year home loan to remain above 6% this year. That may not be enough for many prospective homebuyers in the face of record-high home prices and a shortage of properties for sale in many markets.
