The NorthWest Data Science Collective (NWDSC) is a non-profit organization, created by a team of Westview High students, dedicated to democratizing data science education for underserved communities. Established in 2022 and based in Portland, Oregon, NWDSC targets low-income and minority students, providing them with free, virtual educational programs in programming, machine learning, and statistical applications. The courses focus on interactive and hands-on learning, culminating in capstone projects where students apply their skills to real-world problems.

NWDSC has a significant reach, having impacted over 100 students from local middle and elementary schools through more than 60 hours of instructional content. The organization’s efforts are supported by a dedicated team of tutors who facilitate the learning process and provide mentorship. The initiative aims to bridge the education gap in data science, empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the tech industry.

The organization’s programs are designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to learn and grow in the field of data science. By removing financial and geographical barriers, NWDSC enables students to pursue their interests in technology and data, fostering a diverse and inclusive community of future data scientists.

NWDSC’s impact extends beyond just education; it also aims to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment. This approach not only helps students develop technical skills but also builds their confidence and fosters a sense of belonging in the tech community. Through its comprehensive educational programs and community-building efforts, NWDSC is making a meaningful difference in the lives of many students, helping to create a more equitable and inclusive future in the field of data science.
