A recent fundraising project provided $18,000 to purchase and train a special drug-detecting dog for the jail. As the application noted, “Illicit drugs inside of jails has always been a problem, but the recent prevalence of Fentanyl has made almost all illisict drugs more potent and therefore more dangerous…staff in the Washington County Jail have been managing more and more frequent overdoeses and drug seizures…They currently have one narcotic detection dog on the K9 team, but that dog is dedicated to the patrol division and even more specifically to the Westsside Interagency Narcotics Team…The requested funds will cover the cost of a pre-trained narcotic detection dog, to include familiarization training by the vendor for the new handler.”

Currently the Foundation is raising money to buy a new van for the Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. The team has 50-60 Cadets, ranging in ages from 14-21, and 14 Washington County Sheriff’s Office Deputies. The SAR team responds to local and state-wide searches, rescues, and evidence-searches. The current 25-year-old 15-passenger van needs replacing. The Sheriff’s Foundation of Washington County is raising $70,000 for this urgent need.
