4h kids in pool

Have you paddled a canoe, ridden a horse or made a tie-dyed shirt before? 4-H Campers get to explore natural science, technology (GPS or Robots), outdoor cooking, and more—all to Learn by Doing. It’s the 4-H way! 4-H has clubs and programs all over Oregon, so join us at Summer Camp at the Oregon 4-H Center near Salem, and you’ll have community and classes ready for you when the school year starts.

Some camps have specific themes of interest to campers, while others have a wide range of fun opportunities for kids to find their Spark while making friends. Check out our website for details, dates and locations, and know that whichever camp you pick, it will be the best thing you did all summer! The Oregon 4-H Center is an American Camp Association Accredited camp center.

Wagons Ho! We are preparing to return to the trail this year! The dates are set, the energy is building, and we hope you will join us on the Trail through the Ochoco Mountains this year. Plans are being made and we are looking forward to another great year on the trail. Please note, all adults must be background checked and attend a youth safety orientation before participating. Every year since 1982, the Washington County 4-H Wagon Train has provided opportunities for youth to experience a living history through club events and our annual one-week camp.

earthquake sign

You never know when the unexpected might happen: a major earthquake, fire, or other disaster event could displace you and your family. If your home was uninhabitable, how would you survive? Join us for a fun, hands-on experience and learn what to do at the Disaster Survival Workshop. At this workshop, you’ll learn survival skills for a variety of disaster scenarios from our expert guides—experienced scouts (Troop 618) and Neighbors Ready! volunteers. Our guides will lead us in these skills: tenting; cooking with non-electric heat; cleanup with limited water; basic first aid; basic sanitation & waste management; and water collection, filtration, and purification, and more. You’ll also enjoy preparing outdoor meals together; dinner is included. If you’d like to practice your skills more, you can also choose to camp overnight with Neighbors Ready! volunteers. We welcome adults and accompanied-minors, 6th grade and older, with a parent or legal guardian at the event. Enrollment is limited to 40 people to keep groups small for a personalized experience. We suggest a $15 materials fee to cover our costs, and also offer full scholarships. We also welcome donations. Space is limited, so sign up early through the registration form! Questions? Visit the Neighbors Ready! website or contact info.cedarhillsready@gmail.com.

The mission of Neighbors Ready! is to create caring, connected and resilient neighborhoods. We are committed to making sure every neighbor is prepared and has the best chance of survival in the event of a disaster.

wcso summer safety guide

Our Summer Safety Guide blog post will provide you with essential tips from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on how to have a safe and enjoyable summer season. Join us as we explore strategies for a fun and secure summer for you and your loved ones. In this three-part series, we delve into important topics such as: Water Safety—warm days offer the possibility of new and fun summer experiences, many of which occur near a pool or open body of water, but keep yourself and your loved ones safe while trying to stay cool; Travel Safety—planning on traveling this summer? If you plan to be away from home for a few days or more, don’t give criminals clues that you are not home. Consider these precautionary measures to help keep your home and belongings safe while you are away; Home Alone Safety—with summer break here, you may be wondering if your child is old enough to stay home alone. This question is challenging because it depends on the child’s maturity. Ask yourself some important questions to help inform your decision. You can find more information about these helpful tips on the Summer Safety Guide. Ask WCSO is produced by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

india festival

The 2024 ICA India Festival will be held at a new venue—Beaverton City Park—right across the street from Beaverton City Library! We are trying a new venue and vibe this year for a picnic-style event with a large grass field, a splash fountain for kids to cool off, and dozens of vendors offering food, arts, crafts, clothing, and other services. This year, we invite everyone to bring your picnic chairs, blankets, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Don’t leave your energetic vibe at home; we’re going to have a picnic in the park with all the expected live music, food, drinks, and vendors like we have every year! New for 2024 will be live hands-on demonstrations for cricket, mehndi (henna), and a platform to learn new moves for classical Indian dance. Be a part of the action, try your skills, and learn something new!

Learn about the India Cultural Association (ICA) and the festival on the website here

Disability, Aging and Veteran Services (DAVS) is collecting public input about the needs of veterans, people with physical disabilities, and older adults in our community. The survey is one part of a larger community needs assessment we are conducting to help identify gaps, leverage resources, and prioritize services in our next strategic plan (2025-2029 Disability, Aging and Veteran Services Area Plan). This is a requirement under the Older Americans Act. We especially want to hear from Washington County community members who are: Ages 55+, particularly Black, Indigenous, and people of color; immigrants and refugees; LGBTQIA+ older adults and veterans; people who are homebound or isolated; older adults with low income; unpaid family and friend caregivers; veterans of all ages and their families; adults with physical disabilities.

Your voice matters: Tell us what you need! Our survey is available online in Arabic, Chinese (Traditional), English, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese through July 22. We also have hard copies of the survey in these languages if you prefer to fill out a paper version. Stop by the DAVS office during regular business hours at 5240 NE Elam Young Parkway, Suite 300, Hillsboro. If you would like to take this survey by phone, in another language or need any other accommodation or assistance, please call 503-846-3060.

Washington County has commenced the construction of the Center for Addictions Triage and Treatment (CATT) in Beaverton, aiming to open by late 2025. The facility will address the county’s significant shortage of substance use treatment services by adding 86 new treatment beds. Services at the Beaverton site will include residential treatment, sobering, and withdrawal management provided by CODA, Inc. The project also features a second campus in Hillsboro, offering outpatient services through various partner organizations, with an anticipated opening in spring 2025.

The CATT project, in development since 2019, has been shaped by community input from over 200 individuals. Holst Architecture and R&H Construction, partnering with Advanced Tribal, are overseeing the design and construction. The $63 million project is funded through diverse sources, including Behavioral Health funds, Measure 110 grants, and local opioid settlement contributions. The initiative emphasizes creating a trauma-informed space for those seeking addiction treatment, aligning with Washington County’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

National Night Out (NNO) registration is open! The Sheriff’s Office encourages Washington County communities to participate in the upcoming NNO celebration, an annual community-building campaign on the first Tuesday of August, focused on gathering neighbors and local law enforcement together. This program inspires camaraderie and partnership and promotes safe and inviting neighborhoods. Building strong communities is more critical now than ever—plan a social gathering with your neighbors, then register your event with the Sheriff’s Office before July 19 to invite deputies and staff to drop by. We’re excited to see you again and welcome this opportunity to connect!
