New round of small business grants from Washington County

On November 2, 2020, Washington County will release another round of small business grant funds, for businesses negatively impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The funding is available county-wide—in cities as well as unincorporated areas within the County. 

Eligible businesses may receive up to $10,000 in grant funds, based on factors such as whether the business was closed (or remains closed) under Executive Order, whether the business has received prior funding assistance, remaining available funding, and other factors. 

Interested parties should apply between November 2 and November 16. To apply, or to learn more information about assistance to businesses impacted by the pandemic, please go to the County’s business assistance website: co.washington.or.us/CAO/business-recovery.cfm.

Jim & Patty’s at Forest Heights

(from a NextDoor post) Hello Neighbors, I wanted to provide an update on our new cafe. First, we apologize for the slow pace. We have a full design and a great architect and contracting team in place. The permitting process is slower than expected. That said, we realize the Portland city staff and process is limited due to Covid-19 and we are all working through these crazy times together. 

We’re going to use as much of the existing infrastructure as possible. Our development budget is different than that of the Green Goddess! However, we’re excited about what we have put together—especially the grill and hood that will allow us to offer our full food menu. You’ll also notice a different color scheme—including a bit of tie dye! We’ve also begun to assemble a staff, including a fantastic manager (Bryan) who was once part of our Coffee People enterprise. He’s excited to be back and to be a part of this community. 

We’ll provide more updates as we go. Given that we are excited to begin getting to know everyone, we may just occasionally set up an outdoor table or two with just coffee and some pastries. We’ll let you know if/when we do that. 

Fresh local eggnog at Schoch Dairy

Schoch Dairy, just a short pleasant drive west on West Union Rd. in Helvetia, is again offering their delicious eggnog starting around November 5. Visit their Facebook page to get details! Also chocolate milk and regular whole milk from their cows, plus cheese and eggs from nearby farms.  

Training for home care providers

Oregon Care Home Consulting & Training provides guidance, support, and training to individuals in Oregon looking to start their own adult foster care homes for seniors and individuals with physical disabilities. Our upcoming training is “Ensuring Quality Care” (EQC). This online course is a required training for anyone looking to open or manage an adult care home in Oregon. Deer Hill subdivision offers unique home lots 

Long-time Cedar Mill residents Gail and Paul Parker have subdivided their property to create five custom home lots in a pocket neighborhood. They describe it as, “A neighborhood bound together by the balance between homes and habitat.”

Art at Home: Activities for Home-Schooling Parents–Debbie Teeter

Two-part Workshop
Thursdays, November 5 & 12, 6-8 pm 

Note: This class is intended for parents or guardians teaching children at home. The activities provided can be used with a wide range of age levels.

This is a two-part workshop designed to provide parents with instructionally sound art activities to do with your children at home, using inexpensive basic art supplies, such as pen, crayon, watercolor, markers, tempera paint, glue and scrap materials. Each participant will receive a set of lesson plans/directions for several projects. A few projects will be shared each class, with time allotted for hands-on activity. Painting On Fabric: Making Holiday Gifts with Textile Paints–Emily Stevens

One-day Workshop, two choices of dates
Tuesday, November 10, or Saturday, December 8; 10 am-2 pm
Minimum 3, maximum 5 students

Explore painting on fabric that may be used for clothing, greeting cards, tote bags, aprons, tee shirts, wall hangings. Go home with painted textile samples that can be used for a variety of Holiday gifts. All students will be provided a kit in a (Covid-19 safe) zip lock bag with all the supplies needed for the class. The kit will contain a small gift bag, tote bag, fabric swatches, patterns, transfer paper, and freezer paper. Paints and brushes will be supplied by the instructor. Gloves will be available for safe handling of the products. Techniques will be taught. You may bring your own patterns and clothing to paint on if you desire but that is not required. This is a really fun time. It doesn’t matter what skill level you are. It’s just plain fun.You’ll splatter, scrape with a credit card and enjoy the magic of watercolor at its best.
