Introduction to Watercolor Painting II

Beginner level, led by Susan Pfahl. Builds on learning from Watercolor I. Each class, we experiment with how the paint, paper, and water react, then paint a simple subject incorporating this “experiment” into our work. Skills will increase.

Gothic Calligraphy
Thursdays, September 14-28, 6:30-8:30 pm, max 6 students.

Introductory class, led by Susan Pfahl, covering how to create Gothic letter forms. No prior experience with calligraphy needed. Left-handed individuals are welcome.

Back to School Savings Strategies by Sunset Credit Union

Cedar Mill Farmers Market

Saturdays through October 14, 9-2, Corner of NW Cornell & Murray Roads

Look up “farmers’ market” on the internet and you will see that a farmers’ market is a place where local farmers sell fruit and vegetables and sometimes meat, cheese, and other products directly to consumers. Your local Cedar Mill Farmers Market is all that and more! It’s Community. It is a place for families and friends to come experience fun, music, arts, crafts, food and produce.

The Power of Produce Program (POP) is a nationwide program that began right here in Portland, with the goal of introducing kids to the fun of trying new foods, especially new fruits and vegetables. Each week, kids participate in a project or activity such as bingo, scavenger hunts, guessing games, and so much more. We go on market scavenger hunts, learn to “eat from the rainbow,” and plant and watch things grow. Once the project is complete, the kids are given $2 in tokens that they can use to buy whatever fruit or vegetable they want. The produce vendors love seeing the kids come in with the excitement they have to pick out their own produce. The POP booth services 50-75 kids each week. It is a truly busy place.

Working with the Adelante Mujeres Program helps new vendors who are in this program begin their own businesses. One of our favorite vendors, La Popular (awesome tamales), began as an Adelante Mujeres vendor. They now operate successfully on their own. Booth fees are waived for the first year for these special vendors to give them a solid boost. We have had a number of vendors come to us over the years and we value the partnership the market has with them. This year our new vendors to this program are Baja Snacks and El Goloso. Please make sure to visit them!

SNAP & the Double Up Food Bucks Program assists people who have SNAP cards to “double up” on their produce. If you have a SNAP card, just come to the information booth, we will run your SNAP card for the amount you would like to deduct, and then we match that amount (up to $20 each week) with Double Up FoodBucks. It is a great way to help you get more fresh produce than you might otherwise get. Thank you, Farmers Market Fund! Our market has $5000 to support this program—please come out if you have SNAP benefits (or CASH benefits)!

From vendors who have been with the market from the beginning, like The Olive Branch and Les Couleurs de Provence to brand new vendors like Pahlow Meats and Mai Bakes, you are sure to find something to your liking. Our size allows us to have a lot of variety but doesn’t seem overwhelming. Indulge in mouthwatering tamales, tacos, and baked goods. Find the freshest produce around. Pick up a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a treat for your puppy or kitty, and taste test amazing olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and fudge. Check out our wonderful artisans and listen to some great local musicians.

Cedar Mill’s real estate market: prepping your home to sell in 2024

Last month I asked if you were thinking of selling your home in 2024. Our Spring Market is our highest and fastest-selling market. If you plan on getting top dollar for your house, you need to be ready to sell somewhere between mid-January and the week before Memorial Day (May 24, 2024). The optimum sales price achieved in our Spring market is around April 15.

Many experts are predicting mortgage rates will drop by year’s end to around 6%. If so, we may see another seller’s market like the Spring of 2022. Will you and your house be market-ready? To be prepared to sell, you’ll need to do two things: prepare your house for sale and prepare yourself financially. I’ll cover preparing your house in this article, as knowing your home value will guide your financial worth, and the purchase of your next home. This is where an experienced realtor (ME!) can be of inestimable help in valuing your home.

Sellers always have the right to sell as-is. You will have capital gains from the day you purchased your house to the day you sell, minus improvements. If you have done none or just a few, updates (windows, roof, furnace, a/c, hot water heater, kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, etc), your house will be seen by buyers as a ‘fixer,’ or of less value than it would if it has current updates. Because of our huge gains in property values, you may be content with your proceeds if you have chosen not to update.

I might suggest exterior and interior paint, or to re-carpet or refinish floors, but to do those would always be a choice you would make. Some contractors may be willing to be paid at closing. If you want to maximize the value of your house and receive multiple bids, then you will want your house to look like a magazine.

Many homeowners do more than they need to, costing them more than they should spend. I can identify areas that need to be addressed, and those that don’t, possibly saving you thousands of dollars. I often suggest that we have a pre-inspection, identifying major repairs, if any, which may need to be taken care of before our buyer has their own full-house inspection. Potters’ Fall Fair

We will host over 30 Oregon Potters Association-affiliated ceramic artists in our onsite greenhouses for this market-style event. You can meet local makers and shop their wares, ranging from kiln-fired plates, bowls, and mugs to one-of-a-kind sculptures and many other handmade pieces. There will also be a food truck stationed nearby with an assortment of fresh autumnal pastries from the cafe. Up the hill, you’ll also be able to explore our photo-worthy pumpkin patch featuring hay bales, local pumpkins, and scarecrows from our annual community scarecrow contest!
